BSOD while trying to display

Well, this is the whole problem:

Recently I purchased and installed ATi Radeon HD 4770 GPU (XFX) and installed it. There is no problem with the hardware as the Power Supply is from Coller Master 460W Extreme Power- more than adequate to run the show.

I use freewares like PgcEdit, VobBlanker etc to backup and customize DVDs. As I try to use the Display option of PgcEdit for a particular PGC, sometimes I get a BSOD, for VobBlanker whenever I try to use the preview, I surely get a BSOD. In the BSOD I can see that the trouble is with the ATi display driver.
I have also seen that MPC can not seek properly when playing a DVD, it simply hangs, or the audio advances but the video freezes and never recovers.

I have always used the K-Lite Mega Codec Pack, and the all the above softwares are cureent version. I also updated the driver from official XFX site for the graphics card. So what exactly is the problem? Could some one please tell me how to solve it?

Uninstall K-Lite Mega Codec Pack,its a pos that should be buried,only use the codec needed,k-lite installs waaaay too many codecs which conflict with each other causing problems like what you have.

I believe the conflict is occurring between the display driver of ATi and (may be) K-Lite.

Though I must say that some troubles related with AV playback never occurs when K-Lite is installed.

So should I go for some other Codec pack? Like CCCP may be?

The only good codec pack is the one you don't install.

Codec packs were created for the warez crowd who just want a quick fix and are too lazy to do it properly. You do not need a codec pack.

If you are playing back videos, use a player such as VLC or The KM Player, which can play most formats without the need for extra codecs being installed. Of consider FFDShow, which will allow you to open most video formats in Windows Media Player.

If you are encoding videos then use MediaInfo to determine which codec you need for a given video, and install just that codec.

That said, the BSOD is usually a sign of something much lower level that codecs. It could be driver related, it could be hardware related. The BDOS includes code, usually around 9 digits long, and often an error message. It may not mean much to you, but if you can post exatly what the BSOD says, there is a good chance someone here can point you in the right direction for a fix.

Thanks guns1inger, I was hoping that you might drop by.

I installed K-Lite after one of my friend recommended it to me, he was having some problems related with explorer whenever he wanted to open a folder containing media files, K-Lite fixed the problems. Secondly I thought it will take the worry off me, as you might remember that i love to play around with video files and encoding those.

I generally play/ encoded DVDs, XviD, DivX, AVC etc, and different types of audio files.

Now I was recommended of ffdshow, but as i checked the source forge page, I find that it is still in Beta stage (beta6)- so is it really safe to install it? Though I know that K-Lite also employs ffdshow. Furthermore, I think that I need vobsub to display subtitle, so ffdshow+vobsub, should it be enough?

I already have VLC and KM Player, I really like the both, but it is encoding jobs that worry me most, and I find that KMPlayer is not that smooth while playing, even though I have more than enough RAM (3GB DDR2 667MHz), and rest of the specs are not that bad.

Regarding the BSOD, I shall try it out again and let you know, but it only occurs when trying to use PGCEdit and VobBlanker, started only after I installed ATi card, and the display process is not at all smooth.

GET RID OF THE K-LITE CODEC PACK. Make sure and enjoy the lengthy experience.

Trying to resolve this problem before doing that elementary step would most likely be a complete waste of time.

I see you have a power supply. Good. Have you hooked it up to a voltmeter and o-scope and logged test results for a 24-hour period? No? Then you DO NOT KNOW that there is not a "hardware problem". Hook up a second power supply, test specific failure cases, THEN you will know if there is a problem, with the power supply and ONLY the power supply.

Don't EVER say "thus-and-so can't be the problem" unless you have taken some specific testing step to prove this. Almost every part that ever broke was working fine right before it failed.

I tried an uninstall-reinstall routine withe the driver already.

EDIT:

Doing a little look around told me that one of the fix may be disabling DirectX acceleration. But not sure how to do it
