hech54 is trying to tell you that you didn't give us enough information.

Some guesses...
1) You are trying to play data discs, which you didn't tell us, and there's something about them that your player doesn't like. Maybe you burned them as UDF and your DVD player requires ISO.
2) Your problems are actually with trying to play Divx or Xvid files. We have a sticky here
http://forum.videohelp.com/topic352457.html
that talks about potential playback issues with Dixx/Xvid files.
3) Your Pioneer doesn't like the media you are using.
4) Your player is going bad.

I can even think of a couple of more, but they are unlikely so I won't mention them.

See. That's wasn't so hard to say.

This is helpful. It's most likely a problem with your laser. There are instructions on how to clean it around the internet and here in the forums. Do a search on it (if you search our forums, search at the TOP of the forums - do NOT search within an individual forum or it will return nothing - search is broken here and only works at the top level down) to get instructions.

Cleaning it will most likely not fix the problem, but perhaps you will be lucky. If cleaning doesn't help, it's time to replace the Pioneer. You can pay for a repair, but typically the repair will cost more than a new model. DVD players/recorders aren't built to last forever. The consumer demand for low cost means that almost everyone uses crap components and they just wear out after a few years and you have to buy a new player/recorder.
