what is wrong with these TDK?

I have been using TDK DVD+R media for many years (x16 speed, always burn at x4 speed), both movies and data backup. Never a problem. The one I used to get all the time were with grey top. I just looked a bunch of them up and see CPDR47G-CDMWP02-095 printed on inner part of it. Those always worked for me 100%. Now, with Office Depot going out of business, I picked up a few spindles, one with colored top TDK DVD+R (VR5F16-00610) and bluish top TDK DVD+R (VR5F16-00337).

Well, all the movies burned on these new DVD+R disc skip half way into the play. Nothing wrong with my DVD player or DVD burner. I had a few original DVDR and burned the same movie which plays OK. Problem goes back to the media, those two TDK types I bought from Office Depot (they are out of business, nothing could be returned back).

I have read here in the forum about different codes for TDK? Is there some you can recommend and where to buy them? Or should I forget all about TDK and move to another brand? I see people recommend Verbatim and Taiyo Yuden, where is the most reliable place to order these from US? How do I know these will not be a cheap outsourced kind as well? Please advice!!!!!!

Thanks!!!!

See www.nomorecoasters.com for a list of good media, and where to buy it.

TDK = CMC = icon_puke_l.gif
You are using low-grade media. Switch to something better.

A few places you can for look for discs online:

http://www.rima.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc
http://www.supermediastore.com/
http://www.meritline.com/cd-dvd-media-and-accessories---c-7525.aspx

For your TDK media, check our Media page. Take the media code from your discs and plug it in there and you will get some information about it. Quite a few brands of media are made by other manufacturers and just rebranded, so quality may vary greatly. sad.gif

You can also go to this site for media info: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/ (Or NoMoreCoasters, Thanks, LS. smile.gif )

Thanks guys! And I did just place an order with Amazon for Verbatim disk, but it sounds like a gamble to me - either I will get "good" one from Taiwan or "bad" one from India. At least I can return the "bad" one... I noticed Walmart carying these as well, but on-line order only for a much higher price plus shipping and taxes...

I have been using Verbatim from India, and have not had any problems whatsoever! But, even if you feel that they are BAD, they are still a thousand times better than TDK.

Office Depot went out of business? That's the first time I've heard that.
Buying any branded media is a gamble these days but I've had good luck with Sony.

Verbatim media is fine, regardless of where it is made (India, Taiwan or Singapore are all fine, and easily found in the USA).

All Office Depot in NJ are shutting down. The Wiz was 6-7 years ago. CompUSA was a few years ago. Circuit City completely shut down now. Office Depot locations shutting down too. Of couse, I'm speaking only from NJ side. Not sure if they are keeping on-line stores or if its not state-wide, but its a sad truth. The only real electronic store left in Jersey is Best Buy and they are sold out off most of the good stuff.

Gotta check OfficeMax. I think they are still open...

Whoas! That's the first time I've heard about Office Depot going out of business! laugh.gif
TDK has been outsourcing their dvd media for years now. I haven't bought them for years! wink.gif
As others have suggested just buy VERBATIM dvd media.

I second this. I am personally quite fond of their DataLifePlus series which are either made in Taiwan (single layer DVD) or Singapore (dual layer), but they're all good. There were some complaints only about the made in India DVD+R DL line of discs, but even Verbatim had to pull back from that and all my recent purchases of DVD+R DL discs were made in Singapore. I just bought whatever newegg.com had in the 8x-10x line and they've all been made in Singapore. I don't know if they even use India any more for DVD+R DL after the problems, but I've read that the 8x-10x line now is only made in Singapore and the lower speed DL discs may still be made in India (not sure about that).

Can you elaborate more on this? I do use my 1 year old HP PC (HP DVD burner) to burn these DVDs. Are you suggesting I should use a slower speed? I have burned close to a few dozen DVDs on my original TDK 16x DVD+R at x4 speed, and never had an issue. Only these new kinds gave me a problem where movies play fine for half of the duration and than second half start freezing/pausing which gets more frequent after 1 hour of play time. BTW, I use the latest DVD Flick w/ImgBurn, and my DVD player is an older 5-disk changer from Sony.

twister6,
Go to HP's website and see if there's an update for your writer. Also try burning at 8-12x,sometimes the firmware gives a better write strategy at those speeds.Lastly run those DVD's on Nero CD-DVDSpeed to see how bad the errors are,if the score is over 90(low errors) then the problem might be the player.
