I'm looking for a player to go with my 46" Panasonic Plasma that has 1080p. I would like a blu-ray player, but I would consider a dvd upconverter if there is one that really brings the video to near hd quality where you could almost not tell the difference.
What are your recommendations?

No upconverter brings DVD up near Blu-ray quality. If you sit more than 10 or 12 feet away the difference won't be so big though.

The best way to find out is with your own eyes. Go to a store with HD TVs and ask them to show you a comparison. Only you can decide what is good enough for you. Even though upconverted DVDs look quite good, they are not as good as Blu-ray. By seeing a direct comparison, you can decide for yourself.
