Recently I downloaded a video in XVID format for some reason of all the players I've got only VLC player seems to be able to decode the audio track and as such no file conversion program be it VirtualDub, Video Edit Magic, Ulead Video studio etc that can properly work with the file to convert it with the audio tract intact instead getting a mutted video converted file! What can be done to fix this?

What is the audio track codec? Identify using gspot or mediainfo.

Install AC3 Filter and you can play it using most players.

Edit the video using virtualdubmod or avidemux.

Don't know about 'so called', but AC-3 is present in almost every DVD made.

You could try AC3 filter.

Or try running your file through Avidemux. Under 'Audio' choose 'WAV PCM', save the new file and see if then works.

AC-3 is a common format for DVD, in fact the preferred one, AFAIK. It can also be Dolby 5.1 AC-3. But low volume levels seem to be a common problem on conversions.

VirtualDub should be able to convert it to other formats. You would need to install a AC-3 decoder, though. AC3 ACM Decompressor would work for that. If your output is to be MP3, I would also install Lame MP3 ACM as you will have more MP3 options with VD. You can use full audio processing and Direct Stream copy for the video if you wanted to end up with a Xvid with MP3. But the AC-3 is usually much better quality, especially if it's 5.1 audio.

You could also try AC3 Filter for your other software players. Or ffdshow should be able to decode AC-3 for them.
