Hello, I've been reading this and I have some questions.

First, I'm thinking of buying this player because I have a few region 2 dvd's from japan that I would like to play and I heard that this player is easy to make region free. I will mainly be using this play to play my non region 1 dvds. However, I read in the dvdhacks section on this player that you're only limited 10 plays of other region discs before it locks into region 1 only and can't be changed again. My question is does a firmware update make it region free permanantly?

Secondly, which firmware update should I do?

Lastly, do I just unrar the files onto the usb drive or do I burn it onto a cd? By the way I'm new to updating firmware.

Is no need to make any update...
Enter Setup, go to "Preference Page" and enter 138931. On Tv you will see Region Code x. With arrow key change to 0.

I read on the dvdhacks page for this player that on the newer versions you're only limited 10 plays before the player locks itself into region 1 only. Is this true?

My 5990 mentions it on the back of the player. Another thing you might want to do is open the tray and press 5 on the remote twice, to make sure which firmware name/number you'll need.

Is there a firmware update that allows these to play m4v file extensions? I did a search and some sites say you can just rename them mp4's and they'll play, but my 5990/37 just says it doesn't have the right codec. Any advice? We have a lot of m4v's that come when my wife purchases TV shows from Itunes.

.m4v files generally are .mp4, yes. The .m4v extension was created by Apple to differentiate between audio-only and video MP4s, I believe.

The 5990 does play .mp4 files, but generally only if they have a DivX/Xvid-encoded video stream and MP3 audio stream in the MP4 container.
Also note that if you buy video from the iTunes Music Store, it's usually DRM-encoded, which the 5990 doesn't support and would certainly make it more difficult to convert those videos to any other format.

For those experiencing movie stopping while about 2/3 in (or 1:54, or 1GB, or sth.), try AviFixed - http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Video/Encoders-Converter- ... ixed.shtml

It can recreate the avi index and fix the problem. Well, for me at least.
(I had this problem myself with DVIP5996K/51 v31 and AviFixed repaired the broken files that used to hang while playing previously. Now I keep AviFixed.exe the flash drive and run new movies through it just to avoid any surprises. It's, small, extremely fast and does the job well smile.gif )

V32 is the latest version and apparently vb6rocod doesn't have an external USB drive to test any modification for the File/Folder limitation.

It's a good idea to make more than one partition (I guess max. is 5 , change via "usb" key - USB1, USB 2...).
Navigation in a list with 600 files is also complicated, even with 8 files in file browser (page up or page down - prev and next button = jump 8 files)

When I turn on my player it's resolution is always 720x576.
I can change the resolution to 1280x720p and watch a movie. But it works until I switch the player off. Next time I start it the resolution will be 720x576 again.
My player was bought in USA and is connected to European Samsung plasma TV over HDMI.
I use this software: DVP5990_37_vb6_v2_3_2_CP1251

Is that something with my player-TV connection or I can tune it in player setup?

thanks!

The player's chipset max resolution is 720x576.

I have a couple of files that are .MOV type, but they are not viewable to my player.
Is there some patch to upgrade the codecs?

No.

Even if you could hack the firmware to get the 5990 to recognize .mov container files in the file lister, you'd still have to have hardware support to play/decode .mov videos and the codecs they may use, more or less. You'll need to re-encode those .mov files into a format the player supports.

(Also, you might want to take a look at the "What media/file types/formats/codecs are supported?" section in the FAQ mentioned in Techflaws' sig.)

This is a resolution of "playable" content.
I'm talking about output resolution -- which is up to 1080p. The resolution in which player sends signal to TV.
My TV supports 720p or 1080i. So I set the output signal to 720p. But it works until I restart my player.

In my Samsung TV there is a button on remote control called "Info". It displayes current resoltuion for incoming signal from connected device.

Right, there were so many people asking about playing back HD content on a patched 5990, I assumed you were too. Unfortunately there are a few settings the player does not keep when turned off, I guess you'd have to ask Philips support about the point of this, cause I can't think of any. In the meantime you might want to ask vb6rocod on his forum (see links in my FAQ) if he can do something about it with his modded firmware.

This may be a function of the Samsung rather than the Philips. My LG TV has the same source display capability and confirms my DVP5990K/75 Philips - set to 1080p in HDMI setup - maintains this setting.

I presume you're using HDMI and not component?

Cheers!

I just bought this dvd player and it's a 5990/12 (Netherlands).
Can I use this firmware which is for /37?

Kinda off topic. I've got it connected through hdmi. Is it best to always set the resolution to 1080p? Got a Sony Bravia full HD

EDIT: Found the link for European version http://forum.videohelp.com/topic355440-30.html

Hi I have a DVP 5990 and am currently using the DVP5990_37_vb6_v32 firmware. I've been using other versions of his firmware since September and it has been excellent with no problems until recently.

I have a 1TB external hard drive formatted to FAT32 with many video files oganized into folders such for example TV Shows, Family Guy. Season 7, etc. Everything has worked perfectly since September.

Recently I added more video files and folders to the hard drive (now at maybe 40% hard drive capacity). When I connected the hard drive to the DVD player and tried to use it as before, some folders when I go into them show that there are no files in that folder. The files are in fact there and were properly shown on the DVD player before I added more video files elsewhere on the hard drive.

I was wondering if anyone had the same problem and could offer a solution. I heard there might be some limitations of the number of files and folders you can use with the USB function on the DVD player. I was wondering if anyone could give me the specifics on that. Thanks in advance.

Can this firmware support showing thumbnails for video files?

For example, if I have this file: movie01.avi, can I put a file called movie01.jpg and have it show in the jpeg preview box when movie01.avi is selected? Ideally, thumbnails would be in a \.thumbnails\ subfolder so not to clutter up the folder.

I guess at worse I can still put a movie01.jpg and teach my 2 year old that it's the NEXT file that is the movie. Or not. smile.gif

What Brand of Hard drive do you have? I had a similar problem. Turns out the AC/DC Adapter to my "SimpleTech" Drive was going bad and didn't provide enough power to the hard drive. The fix was to get a new AC/DC Adapter. I just bought another drive with the same adapter (and returned [the broken one] as defective).

A while back I bought two dvp 5990, loaded firmware from this site, and the systems couldn't be better. However, I just bought another dvp5990/37 for a friend and I cant find the firmware that i used on mine. I am mainly looking for the black background with the vibrant Philips logo. I tried this firmware version http://rapidshare.de/files/45238647/DVP5990_37_vb6_v32_All_Logo.rar.html and updated the system with the Philips file, but the splash screen is still the stock blue. Can someone please tell me what version to use that contains the vibrant blue/white philips logo on black? Thanks.

Thank you vb6rocod for all your efforts with this amazing firmware.

I guess vb6rocod didn't make a V32 with the "Star Logo" you speak of. I made one for you using the Logo you want. smile.gif

http://rapidshare.de/files/46767052/DVP5990_37_vb6_v32_Star_Logo.rar.html

And don't worry, I've changed the Logos and File Browser skins for myself as well as members here and the firmware works perfectly. Also, you should upgrade your players with this latest V32 firmware. It allows for 48 characters via USB in the File Browser.

Thank you so much [philips599037]...You are awesome!!! Yes, I do agree, I should be using the latest firmware. I was just hesitant because I'm not too familiar with changing the subtitle font/placement/color, and I really got used to the white small subtitle font on the bottom.

Thanks again...super logo!
