I have a video file that is in .AVI

It came with a subtitle pack, it had a .idx file and a .sub file

How do I get them together??? I have VLC and VisualHub, everywhere I have looked says to use these two programs to do it but I have NO idea how.

HELP!!!!!!

Open the .sub file with Jubler and save it as a .srt file. Then make sure the names of the AVI and .srt are the same (except for the extension, of course). Leave them both in the same folder. Quicktime player will automatically pick up the existence of the .srt file when you play the video. That will show you that you've got it right. It will then play correctly in VLC.

If you want to "hard-code" the subs into a converted video (like a conversion to H264), ffmpegX and ViddyUp will do this (as will QuickTime Player Pro). Wouldn't be surprised if VisualHub could do this, too (but I don't own that app so I can't confirm this).

By the way, be careful when opening the .sub with Jubler; you want to make sure you know the framerate of the video so you open the .sub file with the same rate in order to keep the timings correct.

Perian is able to display srt subtitles (take a look to its preference pane). So every QuickTime based application (QuickTime Player, or ffmpegx/VH/Moviegate/etc with a quicktime decoder -aka movtoy4m) can hardcode subtitles during re-encoding

bye

Rumplestiltskin, I've never yet managed to get Jubler to open a .sub file. I select the file, choose the correct frame rate and nothing happens.

Is there some setting in the preferences that I've missed ?

Herve mentioned the Perian requirement (for AVI +.srt) which I neglected to mention in my post. (Thank you, Herve.)

ffooky: If you can post the .sub file somewhere I would be happy to look at it and provide whatever help I can.

Sorry, I see now that my statement was ambiguous. What I meant was that I've never been able to open any .sub file of the kind that goes with an .idx.

VLC handles them just fine but I much prefer the way Perian/QuickTime display .srts so I'd like to try another method of conversion other than D-Subtitler.
