Most Divx/DVD players don't care about the frame rate so leaving the videos at 25 fps should be ok. When using target quantizer mode you shouldn't have to change the other settings for each file.

For DVD episode sets, use AutoGK. Far simpler that trying to rip and convert by hand.

For other formats - it depends. RMVB is a bitch to convert nicely - look up the USer Guides forum for several different methods, but expect to get your hands dirty with avisynth. OGM should work in virtualdub if you have the codecs installed, although again, you may find it easier to load the file with avisynth.

I usually use AviSynth to open files that VirtualDub can't deal with.

I rip episodes individually with DVD Decryptor in IFO mode (one VOB each). Then convert with DgIndex, AviSynth, and VirtualDub.

Thanks both of you guys,i think i want to put that on hold and work with my second part of the opening of this thread.I will come back to that (im not bein lazy) i just want to work with what i have right now instead of riping my sets right now. (if u guys think i should open another thread then i will for that, but i know how people hate whenu open multiple threads ,an i don't want to piss anyone off)

Here goes,I have some files that get pixelated during a lot of motion...I'm not sure if it can be fixed but i figure u are the guys to ask and maybe i can clean them up as much as possible with yours guys help.

They are avi.But i thinkk they need re encoded because they won't play in the ps3 (i dont think) just like the first files that i got working now.I figure once i can clean them up an all that pixelated blocks i can go back an do the steps jagabo showed me. but i need to know where to start an what progs to get to start this.

If you are using a constant quantizer of 3 the blocks are in your source.

If your source is Xvid or Divx -- both of those decoders have optional deblocking filters. Enable them before starting VirtualDub and they will perform deblocking as VirtualDub reads the frames. You can also tryTry using one of the MSU deblocking filters.

In the end you may find it's not really worth it though. You will get a smeary/blurry look rather than blocks.

Hi I'm back again finally I just want to say first that I hope I don't make anyone mad by like kind of reviving this,I jus havent had much time to do anything lately.

I ran into this probblem the other day and have been meaning to ask for some help on it but I havent had time like I said.

I have been using jagbo's great advie and havent had any problems but when I was en-coding this one set of files (4) I used all of the same settings as advised and everything seemed fine but when I went to play this in the ps3 it said "unsupported data" So here are 2 caps of the file in gspot to see if you can find the problem. Thanks

Please start saving your screen caps as jpeg files so they are smaller.

Both clips have packed bitstreams. Try unpacking with Mpeh4Modifier and then playing them.

The PS3 may not like packed bistream with 2 consecutive b-frames. The Divx Home Theater profile uses packed bitstream with only one b-frame.

For these files you can do as guns1inger suggest and unpack them. In the future try encoding with only one b-frame.

Sorry for saving as bmps,Didn't know waht else to save as.

Guns,You made a mistake "mpeg4modifier" lol took me a little bit to find out it was a mistake and find the right one.

Anyways,I did what you guys suggested and I left all the settings in that program the same,All I did was check the box that said "unpack" and then saved it and it still will not play =\ Any other ideas?

Ok,I'll do that but I'm not sure what ps3 settings are...I thought that I have been doing that since all the other files seem to work and I haven't changed anything. =\

AutoGK or AVIRecomp will re-encode the files to meet the most basic hardware player requirements

I ended up geting the avirecomp and giving it a try,I don't know if I did something wrong or not but the output file was huge(444 mb)compared to the source(167mb) I'll go ahead and and tell you what I did with the program.

Well I figured I'd try it out before asking how to use it.

Opened the program then I went to source and found the file,Went to the save avi,set all that up under it is "new avi file size = " an the smallest size 350,I'm not sure which i clicked if it was 350 or the 700...then I went to queue at the top an added the job, then clicked start an it took off (slowly)My end result was huge and the quality looks a litle worse than the original.

If I didn't do something right please help with this or I can try the autogk if everything with the first program was done right.

AVI Recomp used quality based encoding, so the file size will change, and to maintain the same (or close to) quality, the file size may get larger. If you use AutoGK you can set a target file size, however you may get greater quality loss this way. It will vary from video to video. There are no absolutes.

Bottom line - if you download crap then you have no control over the quality or usefulness of it, and it will always cost you in the long run. If you don't generate the material yourself, this is the price you pay. Every re-encode costs quality. Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot.

The really sad part about all of this is that the amount of time you have expended getting pretty much nowhere could have been avoided by buying a $30 chinese no-name Divx playing DVD player. It would, in all likelihood, play these files without any problems. Something that the $400+ PS3 simple cannot do as easily.

If the 400MB file works, live with it. If it doesn't, give up. By the time you something small enough to make you happy, the quality will be so low you wont want to watch it anyway.

Yeah I guess I'm going to give up on it =( these 4 files were the only replacements I had.It still wasn't a playable file.

I want to try to rip my dvd series episodes now and encode them to pretty small formats to play on the ps3 if you could help me with that please.

I want to make sure that someone won't be able to download the files from me or my computer if I do rip these,Because I don't want to get in trouble and I try and keep things out of the sharing folders just incase someone can grab stuff from me on there (someone told me that could happen. Now I'm pretty cautious about it)

I know the programs you suggested to get for this before in your post and I think avisynth came with the avirecomp but I can't find it anywhere on my system,I also would like to know what the steps are to do this correctly and make the best of my time in doing this.

So far all I know is to use dvdfab decrypter and rip the dvd IFO,I think each episode should be one VOB,Not sure how to keep the right language and right subtitle though =\ or how to make these decent sized an keep quality. Thanks

For simple conversion of DVDs to Xvid/Divx avi, use AutoGK. Rip each episode to your HDD using DVDFab HD Decrypter in Main Movie mode, then convert with AutoGK. No muss, no fuss. Use settings that promote quality - 640 pixels wide and upwards of 75% quality. Don't try to squeeze the files into a given space.

You don't get chapters. Chapters only hold for Divx Ultra authored files played in a Divx Ultra certified player.
