I have ripped a few interlaced DVDs to my PC. I am attempting to encode them in MP4 for playing on the PS3. It wont accept anything interlaced. When i deinterlace it at 25fps, it plays like "slow" like you can tell when people run. Only way I can get it to look good is at 50fps, but this of course DOUBLES the file size. Does anyone know how to keep it at 25fps and play smoothly. Also, does anyone know if there is a 4gb file limit on the PS3?

Yes there is a 4 gig limit on mp4 varient files. Well what I use with great results for encoding dvd or blu ray to mp4 is nero recode. Give the demo a try, it plays smooth on my ps3. Hope this helps.

Right, my problem seems to be PAL DVDs are 25fps interlaced. PS3 wont play interlaced MP4's. If I leave it interlaced, it wont play. If I deinterlace it with any method, it plays in like slow motion. Only one that seems to work is doubling the framerate to 50fps. This however doubles the filesize. There MUST be a way to have it 25fps progressive and play smoothly?

How are you encoding it?
I've encoded DVDs to XViD using VirtualDub and they play just fine.
I'm currently experimenting with h264 using Megui and getting better results for the same file size.

But the main question remains, do I deinterlace or keep interlaced.

It's not an issue - you can have either.
I don't think your issues are PS3 related - mine plays interlaced/de-interlaced video just fine.

mp4s? or do you just mean mpgs. It will play interlaced mpgs all day but not mp4s.

OK, been messing around for a while with this...
My best results so far have come with using handbrake using the PS3 setting.
The source was a commercial (interlaCed) DVD and the mp4 played fine on my TV.
