Ok im looking at itouches and on newegg i see these 2

One is with updates the other without updates. Can someone explain this to me because im not sure i understand the almost $100 diference. When i go to the apple home page there is a software 2.0 update for the itouch. It costs $10

http://www.apple.com/ipodtouch/whatsnew.html

So they are charging like 80 to 90 bucks extra to update it? or do i have to buy all the incremental updates?

Ouch that is a high price difference for something with the same model number. The only difference is one says a and the other says b.

You have got to be kidding me that apple CHARGES you for a software update??????

I'd run away from that as fast possible. Software updates should be FREE in my opinion. You are getting improvements for your product you already bought.

I would say if the capacity is what you want then get the lower priced one and get the update yourself. Boy that is a shock they charge for updates. What a crime!

Now would I be able to convince you to look at an alternative? 16gb for 300.00 seems like highway robbery to me. I got my ZUNE 30gb for 200.00. If you MUST have an ipod touch than I guess this is your only option. But if you are solely looking for storage capacity try looking at creative or archos or heck even an ipod classic has got to be cheaper than that.

Good luck. Just throwing out some suggestions.

Yoda i have a zune 30(1st generation) Its scratched up a little but still plays fine. however after going into an apple store and playing with it(itouch) i really like it with the extras like surfing the web with wifi etc etc. the reason i got the zune when it came was was the screen was larger for watching video.

FYI did you get the software update on the zune? It can do all that the 80gb can do. I have fm radio on my 30gb just like the 80gb.

Anyways since you seem to be hooked on the touch than you are going to have bite the bullet and pay the extra for less storage.

My suggestion stands at buying the cheaper touch and doing the update yourself.

You'll have to check the faq's on the apple website. I don't know the answer to that. I would imagine that you would be able to do a one shot upgrade. Though they may be so picky and greedy as to force you to buy each upgrade. That just doesn't sound right to me.

Anyway hope you enjoy your new toy.

FYI it might be cheaper to get a nintendo ds if you already like using your zune. The ds does wifi web surfing doesn't it? It also has a touch screen biggrin.gif Seriously though they are like less than a 150.00. Or a psp does wifi surfing too doesn't it? You might consider alternatives if you don't absolutely have to have a pricey touch. Just looking out for you smile.gif

Sure glad to help. Though I don't personally own a ds or a psp but read the faqs on the units to see if it might fill your need for a lot less money. Plus if you don't have a lot of itunes purchases then you really don't "HAVE" to have a ipod product. Lots of other stuff do open mp3s and open wma.

Plus if you do get a ds or psp you get the "bonus" of being able to play real video games on them. Not flash stuff that I'm sure is available for the touch via the web interface.

FYI also the DS has the guitar hero touring edition game now with a fret board attachment. Looks really fun. Good luck.

EDIT 1 - You CAN use the DS to surf the web wirelessly - this is from the nintendo website:

http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/systems/dslite/browser.jsp

The Nintendo DS Browser uses the Nintendo DS or Nintendo DS Lite's Wi-Fi connection to take you online through your wireless home internet connection or through any supported hotspot access point. The dual screen and touch screen features of the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite make for a unique and portable web surfing experience. A wireless broadband internet connection is required.

Important: There are two versions of the Nintendo DS Browser, one designed for the original Nintendo DS system, and the other for the Nintendo DS Lite:

Also I checked it out it is only 129.00 for the DS LITE at Bestbuy. I'm sure you can buy a used one for a lot less.

EDIT 2 - I have confirmed that the PSP also does wireless internet surfing:

http://playstation.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/playstation.cfg/php/endus ... p_faqid=80

To start browsing the Internet

Check your PSP system set up:
Infrastructure Mode
Make sure your PSP system is set up for Infrastructure mode.
See Setting up Infrastructure mode for details.

Internet Connection
Make sure you have an internet connection and your PSP is within range of the wireless access point (or hotspot).
PSP® online connectivity requires internet service and network devices, such as a DSL or cable modem and a wireless router - for example, a Wi-Fi hotspot at a café or a wireless local area network (WLAN) in your home.

System Software
Make sure you've got the latest System Software.
Requires PSP system software version of 2.0 or higher. Visit PSP System Software Update to download and install the most recent version.

WLAN switch
Make sure the WLAN switch on the left side of the PSP system is turned on so that the PSP system can connect to the internet.

This is more expensive than the DS. The PSP is going for 169.00 at BestBuy new. Of course you can get one cheaper if you buy used.

I am not trying to totally stop you from buying a ipod touch. I just want to present cheaper alternatives if all you want is wireless surfing on a portable unit. As long as your zune is still functioning properly these would be a nifty addition. Granted if you want an all in one unit for music and surfing the touch is probably better since you can combine the two. But if you don't mind using two units this seems to be a more "economical" approach in my mind.

Let us know what you decide. smile.gif
