How does the quality of avi to mpeg2 done with ffmpeg compares to other programs such as Main Concept or TMPGenc? I wonder whether the price aspect matters... Is the high quality avi to mpeg2 with VBR (average bitrate of 8,000kb/s) and 2-pass encoding performed with free ffmpeg be of similar quality as done with the paid programs?
Thanks!!!

avi?
be specific.
yes ffmpeg can do as well, better.
the less compression, the higher the bitrate,
the less it matters which encoder you pick. quality convergence.
for a free mpeg2 encoder,
start with HCenc.

AVI as in DV. I use ffmpeg in Linux and noticed that it is very convenient as the ouput mpeg contains ac3 file while others do not give this choice (usually pcm or mp2).
I just would like to know that I don't need to look further and the ffmpeg mpeg2 output is as good as it gets for home video.
