after De-interlaced, what is avi become?

Ok , here is my problem

i have DV PAL 25fps file.I use Smart DeInterlacer in VirtualDUB.
apply filters to smoothed and after that, save as a DV AVI file.

so, is my saved AVI file become Progressive 25fps? or still interlaced format?

Because In TMPEG DVD author encoder, the clip file is still shown as interlaced file.

Yes, your video is progressive after Smart Deinterlace.

But there are two issues to consider: whether the content of the frames is interlaced (ie two separate half pictures, or "fields") and whether the frames are encoded in progressive or interlaced mode when you "Save as AVI."

The first is what you've changed with Smart Deinterlace. The two half pictures have been converted into one whole picture as well as Smart Deinterlace knows how.

The second is a matter of how the encoder treats the frames internally. You didn't say what codec (if any) you used when you saved from VirtualDub. But interlaced frames should be compressed as if they are interlaced, and progressive frames should be compressed as if they are progressive. Otherwise (depending on the encoder) you may get cross contamination between the colors of the two fields.

yes, i have save it to Panasonic DV codec format.
as my source file is DV and i deinterlaced with smart Deinterlace. and Save back to DV format with Panasonic. what type is my Video now interlace or Progressive?
or which format should i save to?

and if I encode to DVD, should i choose source input video format as Interlaced or Progressive?

I did some experimenting with Panasonic DV Codec. Even though you are giving it progressive frames from your smart deinterlace, it encodes PAL video as interlaced. For best results with that codec you should tell your MPEG encoder the source is interlaced and to encode it as interlaced.

You should get slightly better results using a lossless codec like HuffYUV or Lagarith. Then tell your MPEG encoder the source is progressive and encode it progressive. The HuffYUV or Lagarith file will be very large though. On the order of 30 GB/hr.

You might be able to frame serve from VirtualDub to your MPEG encoder. That way you won't have to deal with the large intermediate file.

Also, to add.. the problem could be that TMPGenc is reading your dv source file as a true DV format and is following the usual practice of handling these type format videos, and is looking for the interlace flag (if there is such a thing in the dv format codec) and when it doesn't find it, it makes the assumption that it is an interlace source and consequentially configures itself for interlace and reports that your video is interlace.

In such a case (like yours) you would have to "manually" configure TMPGenc (or other mpeg encoder with similary problem) to Progressive so that it can process your video properly. As I hinted, other mpeg encoders and editors might be following the same rules when it comes into contact with a DV codec video.

But as long as you remember this with DV, (whenever you de-interlace it or whathaveyou) you shouldn't have this problem after following this short function.

EDIT: actually, after thinking about it some more, I think that this problem applies to all the other avi type codec videos and you should follow the steps outlined above. Because H264 (avc/vc) is still very new to me, I can't comment on the do's and don't's, however, with MPEG-2 videos, they do have a flag for this sort of thing, (interlace vs. progressive) and *IF* your editor or encoder is smart enough, it will make the correct determination and configure (and report) your videos setup correctly.

at last, i use Lagarith codec. and tell tmpeg that source is progressive.
and choose interlace at Encode setting's Display mode.

I recommend you encode as progressive too. The colors will be a little sharper that way.
