Hi. I'm new to video/audio encoding and from what I've read so far, it seems that H.264 and AAC are the best codecs for video and audio respectively, and mp4 is the official container format. If this is true, what is the best software for converting DVD (and Blu-ray in the future) to mp4 with 100% quality for playback on my computer? I'd perfer one program that can do all of this, if possible.
Also, for encoding the other way, mp4 to DVD, would ConvertXtoDVD be the best option? Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the quick reply. It looks like Xvid4PSP can do what I want. I forgot to mention that I would also consider commercial software. How does DVDFab compare to Xvid4PSP?

It doesn't , DVDFab Platinum/Gold is an "All in one", Rip,backup, convert, burn etc. (and great at it btw) ,where XviD4PSP(although very good at what it does, "convert") is not.
Two different proggy's/tools.....

So DVDFab can do everything Xvid4PSP can do and more? If that is true, that I may want DVDFab so I don't need any other programs.

You may want DVDFab and it's a great proggy, however I'm not suggesting that's all you'll ever need..As a matter of fact, I prefer XviD4PSP or Megui for .mp4 conversions...So you can never have too many tools in the toolbox...Just try and see what suits your purpose....

100% quality h264 encoding = Xvid4psp.
All-in-one but not as good h264 encoding = dvdfab.
...what I have read as I haven't done any comparing. You can test dvdfab and see if it's good enough for you.

Ok, I'll try them both out. One more thing, I'm guessing I would need to rip the files to my HD with something like DVDfab HD decryptor before encoding right? Can I use DVDfab Decryptor to take out video tracks (commercials)?

The free DVDFab HD Decrypter only rips full disk..You'll need the Platinum or Gold version for main movie only or many other features available..But try it free for 30 days..........
Or free alternative, Fab HD>DVDShrink in re-author mode for main movie only backups...

So I could theoretically use DVDFab Platinum to rip main movie VOBs (among other things), and then use Xvid4psp to encode them? Why isn't DVDFab's encoding 100%?
By the way, would having DVDFab make ConvertxDVD redundant, since DVDFab can do coverting and more?

Ok I'm a little confused. After reading some more, it seems that DVD's and Blu-ray's don't use AAC but Dolby Digital AC-3. Why do they use the audio part of the mpeg10 standard? If I want to encode a DVD/Blu-ray to my computer for playback, what is the most similar audio format to use? Is AC-3 a format that is playable on computer?

Because your thread title asks "How to convert DVD to mp4(h.264/AAC?
And you seem to be going in different directions, try this......
http://forum.videohelp.com/topic352374.html
And yes AC3 is playable on the PC.....
