I'm starting with DV, editing with vdub, and then I was hoping to encode to wmv from vdub but wmv codec doesn't show up in the compression dialog. Is this possible via a plugin?

I think you might be able to with virtualdubmod. I know vdubmod opens wmv I believe. Make sure you have the latest build of it.

DV can be imported into Windows Movie Maker, where you can save as a WMV file.

If you install WMV9 VCM you can create AVI files with WMV3 (aka WMV9) encoded video. It won't be in the WMV container. But you might be able to remux it with something like AsfTools .

If I had a choice between Windows Movie Maker and Windows Media Encoder, I would go with WME.
It's a little more advanced, but gives you a lot more options. If you export your video from
VirtualDub as a uncompressed AVI, and audio as WAV, then WME should have no problem encoding
your video to WMV. Some audio formats, like MP3, may cause WME to fail.

I know how to do this outside of VirtualDub. My question is if I can encode directly from vdub and avoid using other apps.

Not possible --- Avery Lee has had very good reasons to despise
the ASF container itself and its "unimaginative" creators as well. rolleyes.gif

Frameserving is the passing of video (and audio usually) frames from one program to antoher without saving to an intermediate file.
