I have been using this guide

First download Flip4mac

Launch ffmpegX. Drag your movie into it.

In the Video tab, select MPEG4 but with ffmpeg.
This won't work with mencoder!

Next, go to the Audio tab.
Below Audio track, check Invert mapping.

Most important, go to Options and check Decode with QT (this won't show unless you've selected ffmpeg above!) Uncheck Letterbox.

Hit the Encode button and let 'er rip. Once the progress window is up, go to next step. You do not need to wait for the first step to finish.

Now, you have to decode the audio separately (because WMV's don't follow standards.)
Back to Video, UNcheck Encode video.

Back to Summary, wait for ffmpegX to catch up, and it will say MP3 in the Target format "To".

Hit the Encode button.

Almost done. After you've converted everything, you'll wind up with an .mp3 of zero size. Trash it. (That's the mp3 from the first conversion.) You will also have an AVI that has no sound, and an mp3 that is only the sound.

Go to Tools. Select MUX.
Down below, select Mux as AVI.
Click the Video button, and select the avi you converted.
Click the Audio 1 button, and select the mp3 you converted on the second pass.

Mux it.

when i try this on all files i can only convert 5 min of a 30 min file and FFmpegX says the process is complete when it hasn't. It seems to covert the whole mp3 audio track fine but i always have problems with the WMV video file.

What am i doing wrong?

Is there a different way?

You need to pay for Flip4Mac Studio. I'm amazed that the freebie
gave you five minutes. I thought you only got half the source file
up to a max of 30 seconds in "trial" mode.

Is there any other way of converting WMV's without paying for flip4mac?

nope, unless you have a PC handy, that is the only way for
us Mac users.

They (Telestream) run specials all the time for this,
you just need to catch WMV Studio or WMV Pro
on sale to get it at a good discount.

But either way, it's well worth the $$$.
