DVD To MKV With Soft Sub-titles.

I'm using Fairuse Wizard 2.8 to convert a DVD series into MKVs with two language audio tracks. The MKVs contain x264-encoded video and a variable bit-rate MP3 for the audio.

Since I don't want hard sub-titles burned into the video, the program is set to extract them, which results in two IFO and VOB files. How would I mux these into the MKV so I can turn them on and off when viewing?

DOn't you get a idx/sub from fairuse wizard? or else try vstrip. Mux the subtitles into the mkv with mkvtoolnix.

Mkvmerge (mmg) which is part the mkvtoolnix that Baldrick mentioned is great and fast. You can add in or remove audio tracks and subtitles how you like. MKV is a great container. VSRip to pull out the subs from your dvd and DGIndex to pull out the audio tracks.

I prefer AC3 to MP3 for my audio because I can digi out the DD5.1+ to my home sound system's decoder. I've read of some units having probs with VBR audio but appearently that is not an issue with what you are doing.

If you seek an alternative to your x264 encoder... I am a fan of AutoMKV, MeGUI and recently discovered XviD4PSP (don't let the name fool you) which is really nice as well. It only supports one audio track at the moment and hard codes the subs. That is no biggie, just use mkvmerge as mentioned above. An extra step or two for a quality vid that you will rewatch is worth it.

I tried again and finally managed to get the appropriate IDX and SUB files out of FairUse. They play perfectly when in the same folder as the MKV file, but I can't seem to get them muxed properly in mkvmerge. Would anyone have any advice on that process, or the MIME-type I should be using for the attachment?
