Hey,
I'm in the midsts of large video project which consists of a database of short clips for music education purposes. The problem is that the dynamic range for the source material is HUGE. The level at which the teacher speaks is tiny vis-à-vis the enormous level at which the piano plays. So far, I've been manually fixing the audio with iMovie but it's a long and tedious process. Is there any program available for mac that would either compress or normalise the audio to keep the speaking level and instrument level closer together over multiple files?
An added bonus would be keep the audio levels constant thoughout the clips too.
We cannot refilm the footage so a software solution is the only solution.
Any suggestions?

That's exactly the kind of functionality I require, but there is no batch processing capabilities.
Another problem is that it can only process audio files. Would there be a program to do this directly to DV files instead of having to extract the audio? I'll deal with it if need be, though.

I do not know if this is in your budget, but Premiere or Vegas (there could be more) are able to do it in time line.

I wrote something like that for the PC platform a while back. It would require some modifications to work on DV files, however. If you have someone on staff who knows batch file scripting, you can mod it to suit your requirements:
