I used to use AutoGK to convert my DVDs into XviD AVI. I started then to use the actual Gordian Knot to convert DVDs after a lot of toil just to figure out that damned mess. Needless to say I got it working. Now 6 months have passed.

I have bought some more DVDs and want to encode them, but I receive an error "Stats File not found." I don't remember any stats file before this...

    My process went like this:
    1. DVDFab (4.****) to rip the full DVD for long term storage
    2. Strip out the Main movie with DVD Shrink (no compression)
    3. Ran vStrip since I never found a DVD that worked without running that
    4. Prepped the VOBs with DGIndex / made the D2V file
    5. Encoded job after selecting the audio file

Now I get these Stats file errors and I haven't a clue. These guides don't seem to point anything wrong that I am doing either.

  2. Hi-

When configuring the first pass (2pass - 1st pass->More), you have to give a name and location where to save the .stats file. It's used in the 2nd pass. Without it there won't be a second pass.

You must not be reading the right guides. Here's Rita's guide that explains it in full detail, with pics for both XviD and DivX configuration in Gordian Knot:

Here's Brother John's guide in German, although he doesn't seem to discuss your question:

Thanks for th guides, when I get to the best setup phase, I can play around with those.

I realize I need to put in the Stats file... but where/when is that file created? When I click save and encode I see that there is a dialog for the stats file, but searching turns up nothing.

  4. It's created during the first pass in the place you designate, in my example above in the root of the E drive. You can even confirm its location in the 2nd pass config window (a different place this time):

Thanks to everyone for pointed out where I set that stats file.

Call me crazy but it seems awfully pointless that I need to tell the encoder that I am going to save a STATS file when the encoder ought to know that I am going to need it for the second pass...

I have some other issues now, but I will look for other threads for answers, if not... I'll just create a new thread on something I am sure has been asked a thousand thousand times.

I am sorry but this is not working again, and I am getting very frustrated.

These stats files are outrageous. When do I "setup" them! I have tried "saving" them in the options of the GK main window, and I have tried to set them up after opening the D2V file. When and how! I tried exactly as you suggested, manono, but every time it errors with "States file not found." Whenever I use the default values, they point to the last movie I encoded six months ago- and not even to stats files, one was the GK log... When I carefully look at my notes that I took at the GK process, I duplicate (while clearly I am not as I should get results every time) and about 50% of the movies encode.

I am no way dumb when it comes to this- I have been using a variety of audio codecs for lossless and lossy music for the past two years and can tell you how to automated that encoding process in anyway.

  7. A tough one, all right. I'd first try and "Load Defaults" in the main and first XviD Config screen to make it start fresh. Afterwards you'll have to put in all your settings again, including where the .stats file is to be saved. If that doesn't work, next I'd get rid of XviD in the Add/Remove Programs followed by a fresh install of XviD, hitting "Load Defaults", and then setting it up the way you want. And if that doesn't work, I'd uninstall XviD, uninstall Gordian Knot, and then reinstall everything again.

Or just cut to the chase and remove XviD and GKnot followed by a full reinstall. Lots of GKnot problems have, in the past, been solved by starting over again.
