Everything has been working fine until 2 days ago. My system just stopped recognizing my HP DVD Writer and I've tried all possible solutions to re-configure it.

I'm running Vista Ultimate Sp1 x64

Tried updating BIOS, updating firmware, looking online for drivers, nothing works. The device is listed as operational as Other Devices in device manager.

It would be helpful if you listed the model number of the HP dvd burner.

I did that (while the computer wasn't running, of course tongue.gif). Same results.

I read somewhere that apparently I don't even have to install a driver. Something must have misconfigured...

they do die..... 3 or 4 years is about the most you should expect from an optical drive. some more, but a lot last even less than that.

windows has built in driver support so about all you can do is delete the device from the device manager and let windows "find" it as new hardware on the next reboot. it will install by itself.

aedipuss, I actually remember this happening in Windows XP a few years ago also.

I did delete the driver from device manager, went through the process but it says 'Cannot find suitable driver'.

sounds like the drive controller board has died. is it listed in your motherboard bios properly?

The Motherboard (at BIOS bootup) sees the drive properly listed as IDE.

I agree.gif it's time to buy a new dvd burner. They're cheap now at under $30.00 for some brands/models even free shipping going on over at Newegg with some brands. smile.gif

Yeah, I was thinking about it. I saw a nice Sony DRU190A 20x DVD+R,-R,+DL around $25.

if you go with ide/ata again make sure to get an 80 wire ide cable to replace the old 40 wire the other one most likely uses.
