Is there someplace to check if a DVD player is multi region before I go out and buy it?
I have a Sony DVP-NS575P and I've tried all the hacks and nothing seem to work.
I also have a Toshiba SDK280 and it doesn't require any hack as all PAL dvd's work

I've looked under hacks.
But is doesn't show which DVD player is multi-region without a hack. Or can I assume all players without a hack are multi region. I know my Toshiba player is listed, but I didn't need a multi region hack to play PAL DVD's.

I think most (all?) of the major brands (Sony, Toshiba, Panasonic, etc.) cannot be remote hacked and require hardware modifications to be made multi-region.
Only the second-tier brands (Philips, Apex, etc.) can be hacked via the remote, I think.

In the US, I think most players are not multi-region until they're hacked/modded somehow.

Sony players are hit and miss, but they typically note in the specs and/or on the box the region coding. Another place to check would be the user manual, most manufacturers have copies online that can be downloaded. If you want a region free player with great video quality, look at the Oppo models.

I bought a Philips DVP5960. It seems to work without a hack.
But the picture quality seems to be lower then my Sony and I am using the HDMI connection. Would the bigger brand name dvd players have better picture quality.

Philips and OPPO's can be easily hacked with the remote to be region free, they play PAL and NTSC DVD's.
According to experts the OPPO 981 is the best multi-system player.

The PHILIPS DVD PLAYERS do not need any hack for PAL discs since they are already equipped with PAL & NTSC. OPPO is nice and has rave reviews but I like to buy cheapo dvd players for PAL/NTSC where there are simple hacks as MOVIEGEEK mentioned. I still have my APEX 1500 & LENNOX dvd players which are region free via hack firmwares.

If you're looking for better picture quality, and audio for that matter, the Oppo's will make you happy...the 980H being the cheapest. And as mentioned they're easily made region-free via their remote.

The Sony models clearly can be done. Here in New Zealand they tried not to for ages, but since it is so hard to sell a non region free player in this country and most of the minor brands are already advertised as region free, the major brands have had to go the same way. I actually asked the authorised Sony dealer (Sony Style) whether their machines could be modified to be region free about 9 months ago, and was told that they didn't need to be as they were now sold that way out of the box in order to compete. Didn't buy the Sony in the end - as I have some issues with the ethics of the company (cough .. rootkit .. cough), but interesting info nonetheless. I suppose you could mail order one from NZ as they do NTSC as well as PAL, but you would presumably need to alter the power supply to run them at 110 volts instead of 230.

All OPPO players support 50/60Hz and 100-240v,all you need is a plug adapter.

You should start your own thread...not threadjack some else's. And you didn't give us any information so we can't even help you.

I live in Ireland and have a Sony RDR-GX350 and want to make it multi regional. I have seen a way of doing it but it required a PalmPilot, or something similar, which I don't own. Is there any other way to hack? Thanks

lizdub - you should start your own post, not use someone elses. And no, there isn't another way of doing.
