I want a DivX player which handles all .sub and .srt subtitles, and which allows me to start watching where I left off.
Replacing my old Philips 642 has been frustrating.
I've tried these Philips DivX players: 3140, 3960, and 5140.
(unlike the 642,) the 3960 and 5140 turn themselves off while Paused (the 3960 after 5 minutes, the 5140 after 20 minutes), and will not auto-resume DivX playback. I find it unacceptable to have to Fastforward to find the place I stopped watching.
like the 642, the 3140 will remain Paused. however, unlike the 3960 and 5140, the 3140 will not play .sub subtitles.
(the 3140, 3960, and 5140 all play .srt subtitles.)
any help please?

You could try one of the newer models like the 5982, but I've not seen a reference to which units remain paused indefinetly.
As for the subtitle issue, the Oppo units are Divx certified and play all of the common formats. But again, I don't know about the pause feature. I typically watch the whole movie.Google is your Friend -
The Pause issue you are seeing might possibly be something you can fix in the setup menu of the DVD player. Look for something like Screen Saver or some similar area. Then again, it's possible that you can't adjust this behavior.
The .sub format is misleading because there are a handful of incompatible subtitle formats that all use that designation. Thus, it is possible that a player might honestly support .sub files, but not the type of .sub file that you mean. Because of this, .srt is the only subtitle format for Divx that basically everybody supports. You may mean the idx/sub graphical format that some rippers produce, but support for that particular format is spotty.
If I had to buy a new DVD player, for a variety of reasons I would definitely buy an Oppo. I also own an old DVP-642 and when I replace it, my replacement will be an Oppo. -
