I ordered the cable below and it does not have the different colored connectors and the wire is not fine like a newer computer in the house. It looks the same as the six year old cable I have in there. The bag it came out of is correct...

(It's a startech cable)

The connector color does not matter and often varies, however the fineness is important.

Not all are exactly the same in terms of their thickness, I would compare it to an older 40-pin cable or a floppy cable, it should be obviously more fine. Or you could actually count them, royal PITA, I wouldn't do it.

Newegg has always been great for me, though it would be easy to mix up such a cable.

Note the connectors should have 40 pins but the cable should have 80 wires.

Right, it has 40 pins but it doesn't have that one in the middle plugged if that makes any difference. Here's the link from the newegg site. All the info on the bag is correct, I guess an old cable wound up in there...

For connecting an ATA-66 or higher drive (all new drives) it's important that you use an 80 wire cable. Both the 40 and 80 wire cables have 40 pin connectors. You can use either for ATA-33 or less.

The cable with three connectors is used to connect two drives. If there are only two connectors you can only connect one drive.

It sounds like they didn't send the cable you ordered.

Thanks, jagabo. You're right; right bag, wrong cable. I just got back from Fry's with the right cable - thanks for the help, guys. smile.gif
