What do you use when WMP unable to play *.WMV, *.AVI.

Greetings:

I download several *.avi, *.wmv from France and I am unable to play it. Most of them can be played either with Window Media Player, BSPlayer or MV2Player. However, a few can't be played. WMP shows an error message "Windows Media Player encountered an unknown error.", BSPlayer a blank screen and MV2Player a "failure" message. Is there anything else out there that can either fix or analyze and pinpoint to the problems?

Can you play the few unplayable files with VLC? (it has self contained internal codecs)

Use mediainfo to determine what audio & video codecs are used by the file

Then there is the possibility that the files are corrupt, or fake files
