Just save it with the default name; the file is not zipped. Don't do anything with the file, except locating it in the installer window. It doesn't matter what type of file the Finder thinks it is, or even its name. The installer will take care of (read: change) that. If your downloaded file is 501,480 bytes, it will be okay.

mpeg2enc is only used for conversions to MPEG-1/-2 formats.

Use Option-click (Alt-click) to download directly to the default download location (most likely the Desktop). [Safari + Firefox]
Use Control-click to activate the contextual menu for links. [Safari + Firefox]
Use Command-click (Apple (Clover)-click) to open a link in a new tab (if tabbed browsing is activated) behind the current tab. [Safari + Firefox]
For Safari, choose Download Linked File from the contextual menu.
For Firefox, choose Save Link As... from the contextual menu.
Just clicking the link in Firefox should bring up a dialog box, stating that it is a binary file and suggesting that you just save it to disk as-is, and not turn it into a QuickTime movie file, unless you have some really weird configuration.

okay...I think that worked! biggrin.gif (fingers crossed confused.gif )

when I control/clicked and chose "download linked file" it downloaded to the desktop with a txt at the end of the file name - did this automatically I had no hand in doing that -

but, then I tried "download linked file as..." and when the name came up, I dropped the .txt part before saving to desktop and that seems to have worked!

I'm converting a mov file to dvd-mpeg2 right now, so I'll let you know...at least it didnt "ding" after 1 second...

but it <b><i>DID</i></b> "ding" after 1 second when I tried to convert the same mov file to dvd-ffmpegx with this info in the progress window:

That would have worked, too. The installer doesn't really care about the filename or suffix.

The ffmpeg presets are picky about the stream order: it wants video before audio. If it is reversed, you'll have to tell ffmpegX how to deal with that, by setting the "Invert mapping" checkbox in the Audio tab. If you see this error, tick the checkbox and try again.
If you search the forum for "Codec type mismatch for mapping", you'll find that it is a quite common error that a lot of users encounter, especially with MOVs and WMVs.

yes, I think you're right about it being hard to convert...original is in m4v format...bought it from itunes and want to put it on dvd so I can watch it on my TV, but converting it to dvd-mpeg2 got me an 11 minute version of a 22 minute show but only a gray screen for 11 minutes, no picture or sound sad.gif

maybe I'll try switching video & audio and converting to dvd-ffmpeg format? or will that be futile, too?

and does that mean that ffmpegx can't convert a m4v file to a dvd version? if so, then I guess I won't be buying anything from itunes anymore...

so i downloaded ffmpeg and i have been getting some of my favorite videos off youtube and such, and converting them to avi format. this worked for a while and now i cant get anything converted whatsoever. i dont know what i did to mess it up. i tried uninstalling and reinstalling everything but it still doesnt work. ive also tried inverting the audio mapping and taking out all the underscores from the title. here is the error message with invert mapping clicked

"Unsupported video codec," seems quite clear... FLV can come with a small variety of video codecs. Video: 0x0004 is On2 VP6 (fourcc:vp6f), which is not supported by the version of ffmpeg in ffmpegX.
It is however supported by Perian, so you could try a presets that allows Decoding with QuickTime (e.g. XviD ffmpeg).

for real? i have no idea what goes on with these programs, i thought if it was flv it would convert it. its not that simple?

Hi everyone, specially Case, you sound like the man with the plan. I just heard about this ffmpgx application and I can't get it to work. I think I have the three extra files, and I have the right intel codecs downloaded, but I'm still getting it to ding positive, and I switched the quicktime interlaced box to make it read the video before the audio as well. This is what I get...any help would be appreciated, thanks....

Your source file already has video (stream #0.0) before audio (stream #0.1), so you don't need "Invert mapping".

The audio that is used in the MOV ("fl32": 32-bit floating point) is not supported by the decoder.
If you have QuickTime Pro, try exporting the audio to 16 bits.

Thanks Case but now I have a new issue...I went in changed it to 32 bits took of the invert part, and now it says must set width value for the encoded video that is divisable by 16. I dont understand what this is referring to. I didnt think the size mattered but my project needs to stay 360 x 240...any suggestions?

Pretty sure I installed erything: mplayer, mencoder and mpeg2enc.intel files
Copied perian files into /library/application support/ffmpegx

ffmpegX will only encode if the width of the output video size is divisible by 16. 360/16=22.5, which makes 360 an invalid width for ffmpegX. 368 would be valid. You could black out the 8 pixels (pillarbox), but there's nothing I can suggest for this app to stay with 360 wide.

This problem happened to me. If your source is a quicktime file, you NEED to have the .mov extension in the file name. For some reason, if you don't, ffmpeg will just jump to finish without encoding anything. Simply add .mov to the end of your file.

I did everything that all of you ask to do, all Intel files were installed, I put all the files at correct place, downdload Perian and install it, but I can't encode RMVB file to h.264 using mencoder option. When I click play button I can see RMVB movie without problem but when I try to encode it just doesn't work, it jumps to finished.

The specified framerate is generating a syntax error.
NTSC FILM is 23.976 fps; NTSC is 29.97 fps;
NTSC FILM (29.97) is erroneous, as it mixes these two standards.

Case, thanks for the information, it fixed part of problem but I still can't encode the .rmvb video to h.264 or also MP4 so I can watch the video on my iPod Classic, as I saw here on this forum I must choose mencoder options and that's the problem cause I choose h.264 mencoder, I change the video frame rate as you told and I start to encode the video. OK, with video encoded program creates a file with extension .264 instead of MP4 and I can't move this file to iTunes, I tried another options to encode it but nothing works, so, I need to know if I did the correct think or if I'm still doing something wrong.
