Ok I reformatted my Hp Pavilion 2610 to xp home edition. Now my only problem is the drivers. The sound driver is that altec lansing audio. I have no idea where to get the drivers. And any other drivers for other things for the laptop. The problem is that hp homesite does not have many drivers for them...so I am at a loss.

From what I can tell, that laptop uses a 'Conexant High-Definition Audio Driver'. Searching around on the net, I found this one for XP that may work:

Since that laptop was apparently configured for Vista, you may have to dig a little to find all the drivers. Get the name of the drivers that are listed for Vista on the HP site and try a Google search using the that exact name. That's how I found that one. HP will be no help, but they may have all the drivers you need, just buried among all the laptop driver files. Their other suggestion was to check Windows update and see if drivers are available through that.
Video card drivers can probably be downloaded from Nvidia, LAN drivers from who ever made the LAN if you can't find them with a search.
I hope you kept your Vista backup discs. This may not be a easy OS changeover.
If that's anything like my HP laptop, Altec Lansing is just the speaker maker, not the chipset name.

Have you researched your exact model, found out exactly what sound hardware you have, and then Google searched for the associated XP driver? Much of this was done for you.
Hint - Altec Lansing ain't it.
A clearer explanation of exactly what you have tried and exactly how it failed would be more useful.
