If you look at eBay prices for non-hdd dvd recorders in general, the prices are about $80. You might be better off replacing rather than trying to repair at that low a price.
I have an invalid friend who had a burglary problem, so I helped him set up a cctv system with a dvd recorder just like you are suggesting ( without a hdd ) at first, then we tried a hdd recorder, then a dedicated surveillance hdd dvr. The non-hdd dvd recorder was a Panasonic DMR-ES10. It had the advantage of recording to dvd-ram which allowed recording and reviewing at the same time but the dvd-ram still needed to be replaced every so many hours.
The dedicated surveillance dvr is a much better solution for the following reasons
1) it can capture multiple channels at full D1 resolution with sound
2) it has a grid system for motion sensing ( not in the camera ) that activates recording of each channel only when the active grids see motion so you do not record lots of "nothing happening" time.
3) it can offload video to a usb drive in avi format for archiving.
4) in many units the hdd can be removed just by unplugging from the front panel for upgrading to a larger drive.
5) many are triplex in that you can monitor, record, playback or view via Ethernet simultaneously.
