  1. "Apple makes its flagship browser available to Windows users for free

At its World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco today, Apple demonstrated several features of its upcoming Leopard operating system which DailyTech covered previously. The biggest software announcement however comes in the form of Safari, OS X's default web browser. Like iTunes, Apple is now making its Safari web browser fully compatible with Windows."

As Windows/Firefox user, why should I care?
Are there any real advantages of Safari over Firefox?

I've used Safari and it doesn't hold a candle to Opera, and I think Firefox's better compatibility (though I'm finding the Opera folks seem to have worked out most of its quirks as well) won't create a big rush towards Safari.

Thanks for the head's up though.

I hate almost all browsers, specially Firefox. Can't stand its look and how people worship it.
I still use Crazy Browser, and for a simple reason: I can type the url and hit enter, automatically the address bar is selected and I can type another url and hit enter. Don't need to use the mouse or hit control+n or control+t for a new tab. It makes things much faster for me.
I tried some other browsers and I didn't find this feature in any of them.
It may be silly, but it's my reason to keep using Crazy Browser.
Is there any other browser that has this same feature on default options, or maybe on the configuration?

Doesn't run like on a Mac. Minimize/maximize doesn't work right. You can only minimize with the button. clicking on the minimized app in the taskbar restores it not maximize. Really odd behavior. I left it alone for 15 minutes and it crashed for no reason. Beta is the correct term for this one.

Try Mozilla K-Meleon, perhaps you'll like it.

Yeah, I found myself hating FF more than IE lately. Its such a bloat that I think there must be many Msoft-rejects working on its code, hmm... it really looks like it could have come out from Redmond, VA...

I suspect Safari will be about as friendly and stable under Windows as iTunes is. Apple don't care if it works properly under Windows - it gives them fodder for more of their mis-leading TV ads. iTunes is an unstable, memory hogging dog of a program. Safari will be a perfect match for it.

    Danger, Will Robinson!

Remote exploit released for brand-new Safari for Windows

I’d like to note that we found a total of 6 bugs in an afternoon, 4 DoS and 2 remote code execution bugs. We have weaponized one of those to be reliable and its diffrent that what Thor has found. I can’t speak for anybody else but the bugs found in the beta copy of Safari on Windows work on the production copy on OSX as well (same code base for a lot of stuff).

    much more at: http://blogs.zdnet.com/security/?p=286

Apple run quite a risk. One thing that has protected them from having their security scrutinised too closely has been the relatively closed nature of their OS. Not too many script kiddies have bothered owning Macs, so few have bothered trying to hack them.

Put Safari out into the real world, and this will change. If there is enough common code between the two versions then it is highly likely that any exploits found will also be common. Cool dude in the ads may have to wipe the smug smile of his namby-pamby face.

Simple fact. Software is written by humans. Humans are, by nature, flawed and imprecise. Therefore software will be flawed. The issue is whether or not anyone can bothered looking for the flaws. To date, for Apple, the answer has been mostly No. This may now change.

The financial website reviews of this announcement yesterday concluded this is all about Apple controlling iPhone support and third party services for Windows customers. Apple knows that the target customer for iPhone is far more than likely a Windows user so this is a way to control support services to Windows users. Don't forget, the cell provider is AT&T/SBC/PacBell nuf said.

Jobs may even be planning to make these services so awful on Windows that some of these deep pocket dorks conclude MacOS would be worth a try. Yes I own some Apple stock

Anything Apple usually looks good and thats about it.
If youre happy with iPod iTune iMovie and all other i-crap for iLifestyle Users (in short: "iDiots") then good for you.
If you prefer to use real and best tools available for PCs - you obviously don't use any Apple product (and no, my dear Mac-fanbois, Movie Maker that comes with every Windows XP is not all thats out there for Windozes, unlike in your proprietary Apple/Mac world and the childish iMovie...)

Apple products are like expensive beatifuly wrapped chocolates made of shit (aka poo).
All you get is just an expensive wrappers

(I don't have Apple stock and never will )

Trying to be objective, I like the looks, but IMO, Apple released it too early. I'd call this an Alpha release - not Beta. Too many bugs both in UI and HTML rendering. A few versions later, I may come back.

Wired News Benchmarks Show Safari 3 Is Slower Than IE 7, Firefox
    http://blog.wired.com/monkeybites/2007/06/wired_news_benc.html
Using a Windows XP Service Pack 2 machine, I tested Firefox 2, Internet Explorer 7, and Safari 3, running the above suite at least three times for each browser. In between each suite I logged out of Google, cleared each browser's cache, history, cookies, and associated files, then shut down and restarted the browser.

The results show that Safari is slower than both IE 7 and Firefox in the login page and message index tests, in both cases by a substantial margin. Only when loading Google Calendar does Safari have a slight edge, clocking in at 12.8 seconds to IE's 17 seconds. But even there, Firefox has both the other browsers beat.

The verdict? Firefox may be getting bloated, but it's still the fastest Windows browser, particularly for running Google web applications.

wellthat review is obviously bull crap
or else the "editors have pre-installed google apps"

can you believe that safari bested the other two in one test of theirs!?
I think it totally needs to compared to IE 6 which most are still running....

but outta the box, IE 6 is way faster on WIN XP SP2 than any other browser
(not counting frontends for i.e. itself like crazy or avant)

my tests, limited tho they may be , with freshy installed systems show a different ranking

IE fastest unless you upgraded to i.e.7 a bloatware mess
    Safari (suprisingly faster than firefox)
Firefox (the first window is painful, but after that, its speed although 3rd is certainly tolerable
and remember it surfs the best of the three top products here-least bugs)
    Opera slow but sape

(if you did install Safari, and also the APPLE SOFTWARE UPDATE program, make sure to not let that component startup with windows, who wants to be annoyed with Apple updates when you start windows????!!!!)

As all of you know, I love to pick on iLife iDiots
So for the sake of testing I challenged my Mac-fanboi office coworker and we just ran test loading same pages on his Safari (on a Mac - Book Pro laptop 2.2ghz intel core2 duo 2GB OS X, about 2 months old) and my K-Meleon 1.1 (W2K on a 1.8ghz P4 / 512MB old IBM laptop).

And what do you know, the result exceeded even my (anti-Mac) expectations, hahahaha:
Safari can lick K-Meleon's ass, all the same pages loaded on Safari visibly slower, most of the time good 1+sec slower than K-Meleon did on the large pages, and in few cases it was like 3-4 sec slower! NOT EVEN ONE PAGE LOADED FASTER ON SAFARI, including Apple's own homepage.
    So, gimme a break, Mac-fanbois
"Safari" my ass, it should be renamed to Slowpoke instead, hahaha

    PS
If it isn't yet another Steve-o iJobs myth and usual Apple propaganda, then I don't know what is
    PS2
I wanted to make a video of both of them side-by-side and post on youtube now, but as usual (with Mac fanbois) my coworker's hurt "Apple pride" overtook sanity and he dont want to do any more tests that would proof his $2000 Apple laptop not even close to my old, at most $200 worth IBM laptop LOL LOL LOL

As I don't have any modern Mac to do it myself, someone please do it and post the video somewhere!
I can guarantee it will have thousands of viewers!

This browser is most just good for testing Safari without having to track down a Mac.

As a normal browser, it sucks.

Since Safari is the browser on the iPhone, getting a Windows version in the field may be the best QC idea that Jobs has had.

Already more holes have been found in Safari since the Windows-beta shipped than in the last 6 months of 2006. And these holes have been the results of automated tests developed for IE. No novel vulnerabilities have been found.

Unless there is real use by the mainstream of the computing public, Apple runs the risk of having its iPhone users subjected to all sorts of security risks. Imagine the results of using a trojan to download a voice recorder into a cell-phone and then relaying all of the calls made by the user to some nasty. The punitive damages would bankrupt Apple.

And just how fast will Safari run if you also have to run Norton Antivirus for iPhone.

I had the following experience today with SAFARI
    Installed on Win XP SP2
Launched, Apple Start Page comes up..
Try to change HOMEPAGE in PREFRENCES..to www.google.com
    No can do!
Microsoft Error (do I want to send(?))
then trying to create a short cut and drag www.google to the bookmarks bar.. ERROR
    No can do..
Seem on this machine, If I want to create a bookmark or make google my home page I cannot do it. I get an error and hav'ta reopen safari

On my own machine (noted above, running Vista Ultimate) Safari works fine, bug free
    What gives!!!

now try the same thing with www.msn.com NO errors!
    Somebody isn't playing fair here!
