Samsung DVD-1080P7 hacks???

Just picked up the new Samsung upscalling DVD Player DVD-1080P7. I have tried all the older hacks listed on the site and none have worked.

Is there a hack out there to make this region free yet..

I did figure out how to do a cold boot -

turn on the machine and hold down the PLAY and NEXT CHAPTER button on the machine itself - and that brings up the language menu ...

but still not luck on making it region free...

Not all players can be "hacked". If there is a known hack, it will be found in the DVD hacks section.

if you open the tray (no disc) and press - (info)
the firmware number pops on screen.

Hi. I bought a Samsung 1080p7 in USA so it is locked to region 1. I live in Brazil so I need region 4 or region free. I also tried many hacks and none of them worked.

I´ve updated the player´s original firmware with the brazilian firmware (from the Samsung´s web site) so it is now region 4. Now it *might* be possible to hack it to region free using some of the older hacks. I didnt try myself because I dont need it now.

It should work for other regions as well. If this is your case I can give more details on how to proceed.

Hi. Here what I did. However this is a ** risky approach **. One minor mistake in this procedure may render your player useless, so don´t go ahead if you feel unsure about this.

1. I downloaded the brazilian firmware available from Samsung.

2. Notice that if you try to update the firmware directly as it is, the player won´t accept because there is a version conflict. Original region 1 firmware version number of my player was 052107.05.1080PHNXEXAA. The brazilian firmware version number that I downloaded was 060507.01.1080PHNXEXAZ.

ATTENTION: my procedure worked for this specific combination of firmware version numbers; though I believe it should work for other combinations, I can´t guarantee.

3. The next key step is to change, at the binary file level, the version number of the brazilian file to match the one of region 1, so the player wont find a version number conflict. Then you can proceed with the firmware update and the player will work for region 4.

4. To do that you need a binary file editor. I used a program called "010 Editor". It is very simple, you can find it in Google. Open the brazilian BUILD.IMG file in 010 and search for the string "060507.01.1080PHNXEXAZ". I found it twice in the file. I then edited each string changing them to "052107.05.1080PHNXEXAA" (010 eases the task by showing an ASCII equivalent of the file contents in a separate window).

5. Save the modified BUILD.IMG file. Burn the CD with this file and also UPDATE.VER. The player shall now accept the firmware upgrade since there is no version conflict anymore. In practice you´re changing the firmware to play region 4.

When completed, it may be possible to hack the player to region free. I didnt try. I was sufficiently relieved by getting the player to work on my region.

Once again: THIS PROCEDURE, EVEN IF IT IS RELATIVELY SIMPLE, WORKS AT THE BINARY FILE LEVEL AND EVEN A MINOR MISTAKE MAY MAKE YOUR PLAYER USELESS. BE CAREFUL.

My parents have this DVD player and doesn't play my xvids in widescreen? Where as my 5982 does on the same TV. Anyone know why or how to change this? The peoples heads are stretched.....

thankyou rodcav, your suggestions helped me convert my region 1 player to a region free. I downloaded the Brazil version of the driver firmware.

Unzipped the files, Opened the .img file in a binary editor and modified the version. Copied the firmware (.img and .ver files) to a CD-R/W disc. I loaded the firmware disc to convert my player to a region 4 player. I then applied the hack meant for region 4 player: Press 'repeat' and then press the buttons 7, 6, 8, 8 and 4 on your remote control, number '4' is displayed on the screen and then press 9, open tray leave open for abt 15 seconds, press standby and power on. I now have a region free player. Plays my region 3 and region 5 DVDs and continues to play my region 1 DVDs

Note that when I loaded the firware the screen is distorted. Don't panic. simply press the 'enter' button when the two versions are displayed. The firmware loads in about 2 minutes, the tray opens up. Remove the CD. Another note, don't load the firmware from a DV-ROM/DVD-R/W. Load it from CD-ROM or CD-RW. I tried DVD-R/W it didn't work. CD-R/W worked form. Just to be carefull have a US version of the firmware copied on another disc.

Another note. If your firmware upgrade fails or you loose power etc. don't panic. All you got to do is power off the player (unplug power cord) load the firmware (I recommed the US firmware), press the 'enter' key even if nothing is displayed on the screen. The firmware will be loaded fine and you get your player back.

BTW, another positive side-effect I noticed is that the player now also plays VCDs. The US version firmware player didn't play these. However I did see the 'freeze' problem once that was fixed by the US firmware. Didn't get it again. It's not a big problem as you can always hard boot the player- remove power cord.

Thanks to rodcav & constif. I download the brazilian firmware, change the firmware version (mines was 071807.07.1080PHNXEXAA - DVD buy in USA).
Put the cd, follow de procedure. The dvd reboot him self, then I take the cd with the firmware, shut down the equipment, power on and with the tray close follow the procedure with success (i was close to the dvd with the remote). Know, I can play my dvd's.

Pd. Has anyone could play 700mb DIVX (High definition)????? The DVD says Resolution don't supported. :(

Thanks a lot. I made my player region free.
I followed the instructions here and everything went smoothly.
My player was originaly 052107.05.1080PHNXEXAA (bought in Canada).
I just got a little scared the first time I inserted the CD to update the firmware. The player froze with "loading" on the front. I waited 20 minutes (I thought that maybe it's doing something...) and I pulled the plug. When it started again I had the update screen and everything was fine.

Any way to get the machine back from a failed firmware update?

I have a brand new Samsung DVD 1080p7, firmware version 071807.07.1080PHNXEXAA.

I followed the rodcav method, successfully got the screen offering to upgrade to the Brazilian firmware, now called 071807.07.1080PHNXEXAA. A couple of minutes later, the player turned itself off.

It now emits sound but not light, and the timer works, at least with AVI files, but there is no picture, not even the Samsung screen. I've put in every conceivable firmware upgrade -- the Brazilian original, the latest US, the Brazilian renamed, but I get a nodisc message every time. If I press Enter, a "load" message appears and stays forever.

I've also unplugged and plugged back in countless times.

Is there anything I can do to salvage the player?

It's possible that it didn't fail. Typically a failed firmware upgrade results in a player that doesn't function at all. My first guess would be that the video settings are incorrect. The firmware update resets all of the player setup back to default, so it may have just reverted back to a default S-Video output, for example, and you are connected using component. Try connecting the player to your TV using the other availabe video outputs and see what happens.

For those folks in Canada, we are region 1 as well. Here is what I had to start off. Have a 1080p7 (Region 1: Canada) and used your Brazil hack info. My original firmware was 052107.05.1080PHNXEXAA

Perform the operations as rodcav mentions. once you have your brazil cd created, insert disk, upgrade will happen. disk will open and close. DO NOT TRY TO REMOVE THE 'BRAZIL' DISK at this point. Let your player shut off on its own. The upgrade should have now happened. Follow these instructions from another post for doing the region free hack:

one important note.. you will be looking for the number 4 on the left of the screen at one step.. I noticed that you have to press REPEAT when NO DISK appears. Pressing REPEAT makes the NO DISK disappear. Then do the 76884 thing. followed by 9.

Done.. I can play my legit VCDs at this point..only thing is..the skip chapter doesnt really work for the VCDs..a small pain, but no big deal.
