Hello all, I've been searching but can't find if this has already been answered:

I have divx.avi files of the following format 624x352, 349mb, 131kbps, now I can burn 12 of these at a time as a dvd data disk and view them via a divx compatible dvd player but what I would like to do is have a nice dvd style menu on the disk...... can it be done?

I have downloaded TMPGEnc3 full trial version and went through the ultra divx menus and produced a stunning menu only to be told that the programme would only output DivX projects to CD 640mb?????!!? (or am i missing something here? also could only get 6 episodes to fit to dvd size output file?)

is there anything else that will allow me to do what I want without altering the original format of the files in order two keep 24 episode series down to 2 disks?

thanks Jez

Is your Divx/DVD player Divx Ultra certified?

AFAIK, limit is 4GB. You can try DivXMediaBuilder in wizard mode to start with. Hope you are aware that to play .divx files with menus correctly, you need a DivX Ultra certified player. On the PC, you need DivX player.

We need to get something stickied on this. This question gets asked 10 times a week at least, and none of the posters seemed to have done a search.

@ jagabo, I don't think my Kiss DP600 player is but this just streams from the original file location so thats all right my other player is Philips 5960 which i believe is Ultra certified.

@mgh thanks for info, found another answer on a different site which explained I could change the output media size on TMPGEnc3 by clicking on the output logo on the bootom left, it's set to automatic as default and this just showed a 640mb CD, I'll give this a go in a bit to see if It will let me burn to DVD if it does superb as this program produced the menu's as I wanted I just couldn't get it onto a DVD....

@guns1inger, sticky would be good with a header as per my question as I have searched a lot actually, but only managed to find answers relating to encoding to dvd files first and then producing a disk with a dvd based menu...

I presume you cannot produce a hybrid disk with a dvd menu that will access divx.avi files so you could play it on a non Ultra certified DivX standalone player?

thanks for replies, Jez

Yes, the 5960 is Divx Ultra certified. I have one too and it does support menus (although I have no interest in them).

I'm losing interest in them now as well LOL biggrin.gif

my other use for them was producing dvd's of our kids for relatives (from the 8 tonnes of footage collected so far) but I can't see most of them having Ultra certified players so that sounds stuffed if you can't produce some kind of hybrid disk, poo sad.gif

@ guns1inger - all makes sense now mate, now I understand that DivX Ultra with 'Ultra' being the important bit is the menu side of things I re-searched and found all the posts you were talking about... suprising how many didn't show up first time around because most people can't seem to spell DivX properly.........?

@ All - thanks all for advice I will await someone clever coming up with some hybrid authoring software to help all those non 'Ultra' certified bods (like the rest of my family!)

Although Divx Ultra certification only guarantees support for menus, chapters, etc, you'll find that ultra certified players usually offer support for other MEPG4 features simply because they're based on newer chipsets. GMC, QPEL, high bitrates, and packed b-frames support is usually improved.

This sticky would have been a good idea if it actually explained more about how to make a divx.avi dvd disc with menus. I'm guessing though that I need TMPGEnc DVD Author 3. Is there any how to's on this site that would help out any?

I haven't seen any posted, and a quick browse of the User Guides forum doesn't show much. I suspect the reasons for this are two-fold. In the first place, it was simply to difficult, as the software to do it was poor, and the techniques involved too much manual handling of xml to make it viable for any one but diehard techies. Now that there is tmpgenc DVD author to do it, it is pretty much a no brainer, so guides aren't seen as needed.

I also suspect that most people still don't have Ultra certified players and/or are happy to use the provided file list the player provides.

Perhaps this is an opportunity for you to be a pioneer and to provide the first definitive guide on the topic ?

Sorry about that last post. I was tired and it may have come off as a little bitchy. Anyway As much a writing a guide like that would make me feel like a superhero I have nor the technical skills or time to do something like that. (besides my bad grammar) (the funny thing is I just misspelled grammar... thank god firefox cought it) Besides... I"m just really lazy. So tmpgenc DVD author is the program I'm looking for huh? and it's pretty much a no brainer you say? well then I"ll give it a shot! I'll let you kow how it goes.

I haven't used this version, but looking at it, if you can create a DVD menu with TDA, you should be able to create a Divx menu.

That said, there has been a few posts in the forums that suggest that it may also do some re-encoding, but that is something you have to confirm for yourself.

Is there anything we can do with Non-Ultra certified players? I have the original Philips DVP-640 or 642 or whatever it is.

I just am trying to compress my movies and put 3 on a disk but wanted a pretty menu to pick which one to watch instead of just a file list.

If anyone has a link to a tutorial on this topic, let me know because I couldn't find one.

Thanks.

kelemvor: Nope. If you want a menu on a non ultra divx player you have to make a standard dvd-video.
