Hi,
I own a sony rear projection connected to a Harmon Kardon 101 and PS-3. Came back in tonight to watch a movie-turned on TV and display is unwatchable ( it was fine 90 mins ago). Obvious huge red bands (see photo) and red text way out of convergence towards the bottom of screen.
No difference what channel/input - tried factory reset no difference
Resizing tv image makes no difference, bands seem on the display itself?
Do I need a repair?
Will it be expensive?

It looks like your red has gone way out of alignment. There should be some way for you to easily adjust this. Is there anything in your manual about this?
I have a very old rear projection TV that has adjustments for each of the color channels (one each for red, blue and green). You can turn them to move each of the colors back into alignment (meaning right on top of each other so can can't see any of the individual colors off to the side).

It looks like some wierd electromagnetic interference, you don't have any speakers near the tv do you?

The arc tells all
Red is in extreme pincushion. If this happened suddenly it indicates a part failure. Time for a service call. These televisions should be aligned every year or so for optimal display anyway.
The better you describe the problem, the more likely you can avoid the charge for the second service call*. Hopefully they bring the right modules.
The typical service guy won't be able to locate and fix the actual failed part. He(she) will determine the major module that has failed (usually by module swap) and charge you for the big module. The more specialized and competent techs will be able to locate the subpart and replace that. Often their swap modules are cannabalized from dead sets in their shop.
They will try to charge new module price. If you insist on receipt that the part is new, they will bargain price for the used part.
* Better to haul the whole set to their shop to avoid the home visit charge.

Hi, thanks for replies so far!
Reply 1 - this situation happened 'immmediately' not over a period of time - can it do this? Thre is a Flash Focus feature that auto adjusts the conergence, I used this and it focused the center of screen and fixed it there but it was still out at the bottom - and of course those nasty red lines at the top half the screen are still there.
Don't know where adjustment is - a factory reset did not fix it (so may be hardware fault?)
Reply 2 - There ARE speakers, but only the ones that have always been there last 3 years, two polk side towers, a sub on the right and a center on the top - I did suspect the magifier aerial on top of doing something bizarre but moved it to no effect.
Appreciate all the answers so far -would love to solve this over the weekend, the repair guy is coming out Monday at 12 and will charge me $90 just to walk thru my door, they wouldnt even look at the photo to say if it looks familiar.
If someone can help me fix it before then I'll donate $20 to a charity of their choice - really!
Thanks all again - I'm using my PC monitor (dell 2405w) in the place of the tv at the moment and no problems so confirmed inputs are OK

Just saw reply 3 after posting my reply - thanks for what seems to be the news I was expecting -dont mind paying service if they have to do real work - any ideas whether this is a part that is common or a special order that will take weeks?
This pincushion can just go zap! yes? 90 mins earlier when turned off it was fine. Thanks again

You have advantage if your TV is common. They will have swap parts. Rare models need parts to be ordered.
Regardless, the set will need a full realignment after a major module swap. This 2003 set is probably due for an alignment anyway.
Try to find someone experienced with Sony rear projection. Sony service centers will have a flat fee (high) but fix everything (with swap modules) and realign to factory spec.
The freelancer needs two skills. Troubleshooting will locate the bad module. Then he(she) needs to become the piano tuner to align the set for optimal display.

Thanks edDV for that precise answer - I don't know the skills of my chosen service people, except that from their site they seem knowledgeable, although dont know from the Sony aspect - down here in Daytona there are no Sony centers for service I know about, just CC & BB.
This is the place who are sending an engineer. The onlky worry I have is they come out take one look and say they cant fix it and charge me the $90. Guess I need a little more faith, eh? If you repair TV's and you don't know Sony you wouldn't get very far IMO.

I've had alot of stuff fixed (business and personal). My personal experience is Sony overcharges unless you are in a hurry. Sony "authorized" follow Sony procedures and charge near equal. With local guys it is all about finding someone competent and price negotiation. They will often give you a break if you haul the set to them and accept used parts.

i would love to know the out come.....i have almost the same model but it is a 47" widescreen bought in March, 2004, and i also have a Sony 4:3 bought in March 2003.....i can't believe i was stupid enough to buy the 4:3...BUT, they do both have great pictures....

Update:
Service guy came out today AM - seem to know his stuff - removed circuit board to take away with him. Quoted me $395 plus call out $89 (ouch!).
Said one of the 'IC' (capacitor?) needed replacing and said he would have to rebuild the board, testing/replacing a number of the diodes.
Will post again when the job is done/final price is paid.
At first the amount seemed excessive, but then again its not much to get an ($2500 in 2004) expensive HDTV (only lacking 1080p) back working as new, with a year warrantee on the repair.

He said if he had the part it would be back later today, if not tomorrow - otherwise if he needed to order the part i dont know.
Fingers crossed he has the part but he hasnt phoned back in 2 hours so maybe he has.

OK,
final report here - engineer came back with fixed board 3PM same day -fitted and tested fine - wow!
Here's the details on his report:
Service performed:
Disassemble trouble shoot circuit defect to the convergence circuit. Remove power supply module. To shop rebuild module. Solder connections reassemble and set up...
Parts Replaced
2 x STK392-560 IC 35.00 70.00
1 x Solder & Chems WICK 12.50
1 R.B. Convergence Circuit Rebuilt 89.50
(the above is the service call recommendation)
Total labor 225.00
Total parts 172.00
S/c 89.50
Sales Tax 31.63
Total 518.13
Warranty 1 year/2 week service call
There you all go - expensive but it looks back to new and was fixed FAST.
Hope this may help someone else with same problem down the line

like i said in my prior post, i think i have the 47" equivilent, cost $1599 plus $200 for the SONY Stand...would it cost the same if something like that went wrong with mine?? would it be worth repairing as it is only 47"??
FWIW, i could replace it with a 42-47 1080DLP flat panel.....

It's ALWAYS worth repairing, if you want the new tv just wheel the old one into the spare room/bedroom - you can never have enough big screen TV's in the house!

Arrrgggghhh..... I hate to bring up an old topic, but this post seems the closest to what I woke up to this morning. Check out the  pic  It was working just fine last night, but when I woke up this morning I turned it on and it was all fubar. A 12" vertical stripe in the MIDDLE of the TV looks almost normal, but everything outside of that scope looks like crap.... Might this be something that is easily remedied by cracking the TV open and poking around??
Suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!!

Like the previous guy you have convergence problem. Probably bad STK… convergence ICs. What is the make and model?

OK....I was able to *finally* obtain and replace the STK392-560 ICs on the D board (no problems with that) and I got the TV powered back up....only to have it looking remotely the same (rather exactly the same). The middle of the screen is "ok" while the left and right are all distorted. Its almost as if someone has pinched the middle of my TV (where it looks correct) and then the sides are fanned out like a bow-tie.
I'm looking through the service manual, but I don't really see where I can adjust these settings.....

Hmmm...and after further investigating, I've concluded that I'll need to test the pico fuses around the ICs. Question is; where do I buy these fuses? Radioshack?

Sony projection TVs are VERY famous for optical block problems. I've seen people who have replaced them 3-4 times. Their projection TVs have high breakdowns. If you can afford it you'd be a lot better off buying a flat panel that has far less breakdowns.
