request info transcoding speed cpus
My current system ---Ausus k8 dx se mb----athlon 64 3000+--- 2 512m sticks kingston ddr400-- nvidia 6200 with dvi hdtv output--1 wd ata jb 200g hd And 1 500g sata2 wd hd--several external drives = 400g for backup-- Fusion 5 gold rt hdtv ota receiver--creative audology 2 zs sound card--new nec all format dvd burner

Everything was working fine and I could record and play back to tv 1080i and 720p hdtv tp streams from hard drive to tv.

Recently my Ide controllers have started crapping out. I can no longer use dvd and booting into kubuntu and winxppro is slow and hit or miss. Once booted each os works fine.

I have 2 major problems I need help with.

I like to transcode/edit the 1 hour hdtv 8gig tp streams into 45 minuite 6 gig commercial free full resolution mpg 2 files and then use xvid to shrink to 4 gig avs files to store on dvd. The problem is this takes about 24 hours on my computer.

With a dying ide controller I have several options (note I do not have the $ to do a total upgrade)

I can buy pci Ide controller
I can buy turon 754 pin board
I can buy a transition board (ASRock 775Dual-VSTA Socket T (LGA 775) VIA PT880 PRO ATX Intel Motherboard ) $58 at new egg which would allow me to use a p4 3.2 @$105 or a conroe duo 6600 @ $308. The asrock board accepts pci express and agp vidio cards and both ddr and ddr2 Which would allow me to replace my memory and video card as I could afford.

This all comes down to the speed of the processer in doing the type of transcoding I want to do at a minimum acceptable speed considering bang for buck.

Unfortunately I have not be able to find transcoding speed comparisons.

Could someone point me to such comparisons or relate to me your experiences in cpus and transcodes of this type.

Note the most stressful game I play is solitaire. Except for video my current equipment does everything I need.

Thanks Stan
