Nope...and I don't see what it has do with adding subtitles. Edit your movies using avidemux or virtualdub instead.

Hi. Great site! I hope you can help me. I recently rediscovered the fine art of ripping, using this tutorial: http://elliottback.com/wp/how-to-rip-a-dvd-a-tutorial/ (DVDDecrypter to AutoGK and you're done). So I ripped a foreign film and it turned out looking and sounding great. Found this tutorial: http://forum.videohelp.com/topic316471.html and am having problems.
Since I don't know what I'm doing wrong, I created a log of my actions. Check it out:
Checked and found dialogue starts at 00:58.
Predefined size always at 700Mb
Made output file always in the same location, but with a different name.
1st Attempt:
Did not add subtitles (CTRL-F8 not pushed).
Under Advanced settings, did not select anything under "Subtitle Options"
Results: Subtitles came in early, at 00:29.
2nd Attempt:
Same file as before, no other settings changed.
This time CTRL-F8, using External Subs in .srt format I found online.
Under "Advanced Options," "Use External Subtitles" selected.
Results: Two subtitle sets, one overlaying the other, both appeared
early, at 00:29.
3rd Attempt:
This time CTRL-F8, using External Subs in .srt format I found online.
Under "Advanced Options," "Display only forced subtitles" and "Use external subtitles" selected.
Results: Two subtitle sets, one overlaying the other, both appeared early, at 00:29.
4th Attempt:
This time CTRL-F8, using External Subs in .srt format I found online.
Under "Advanced Options," "Display only forced subtitles" was selected.
Results: Two subtitle sets, one overlaying the other, both appeared early, at 00:29.
5th Attempt:
Did not add subtitles (CTRL-F8 not pushed).
Under "Advanced Options," "Display only forced subtitles" was selected.
Results: Subtitles (one set) came in early, at 00:29.
So it appears that there's a phantom set of subtitles that were ripped when I got the file off the DVD, but they only come out at certain times. AND, they're wrong, meaning they appear about 30 seconds too early.
Any advice?
Thank you!

Your AVI has one set burned into the video and the other set is the external subs being played at the same time Open the AVI in VDubMod to confirm there's just the single set burned into the video. Move the external SRTs or whatever they are out of the same folder as the AVI to get rid of the double subs.
Delay the subs you have by the 29 seconds (SubtitleCreator among other programs, if the subs are in IDX/SUB or SRT formats) and then use them together with the CTRL-F8 trick. The fact that they appear early is almost certainly because of the film being decrypted improperly. How did you get it to the hard drive? Did you use DVD Decrypter in IFO Mode as that first guide suggests? Is there a 29 second cell at the very beginning, perhaps some kind of a logo or black screen or something, something which can be deselected when decrypting? Is this a newer movie that perhaps has additional copy protection?
Also, whenever there are AutoGK problems you should always post the log, which can help determine what's going on.

Thanks for your response. I'll restart the process in order to get a log.
I did what the previous tutorial suggested, using DVDDecrypter and making an IFO mode.
SubtitleCreator looks pretty complicated, and I had some trouble with it. Is there another program, perhaps? As an example, I didn't see where I could even load up the AVI to look at it!
Also, I installed VDubMod and tried to find if there was a hard-coded subtitle in the file. I watched the video and it didn't show up, so I'm guessing not. Strangely, the audio started 24 seconds in, which should not have happened.
As for the intro to the video, I can't say that there was anything like you're describing.

AutoGK already comes with VDubMod and uses it for encoding. That's why I mentioned it. You said the subs were about 29 seconds early, so use that as a good starting point. Open the SRT (?) in SubtitleCreator and set the delay in Synchronize->Set Delay. Then play those subs along with the AVI (making sure they both have the same name, like Movie.avi and Movie.srt). Adjust the delay until everything matches up. This assumes the subs you got are in the same format (PAL or NTSC) as your DVD and the out-of-synch doesn't get worse as the movie progresses. Then use those edited subs and the CTRL-F8 trick to burn them into the video.

VDubMod isn't really a player. Forget about the audio being out of synch. You were just meant to scroll around to make sure you had single subs and not double subs. Now you say you have no subs at all. So, if you use the CTRL-F8 trick to get subs into the AVI, don't also go to the Advanced Settings and check the "External Subs" box. Make sure it remains unchecked. That's for something entirely different - for when you want subs extracted from the DVD but not burned into the video. Either use the DVD subs and burn them, or use subs you downloaded from somewhere and burn them. And if you intend on burning the subs into the video, don't check that "External Subs" box.

Hey, it worked! Thanks to you I now know how to do this. The subs were burned in and came in at just the right time.
They showed up a tad early, but I said to myself: "I think I can tinker with that until I get it right." But as I watched the film, just a few minutes into it, the subs were way off. Whereas the first line of dialogue appears only a few fractions of a second before the first guy talks, which can be fixed, 3 and a half minutes later the subs were at least 7 seconds early.
Does this sound familiar to anyone? Does anyone know why this is happening? A gap that keeps widening as the film progresses?

These were the downloaded subs you used? It's sounds like a very bad framerate mismatch (23.976 .vs 29.97fps?). That's just a guess, but SubtitleCreater can also do framerate adjustments. Or, as an alternative, try the IDX/SUB VobSubs that AutoGK extracted from the DVD for you earlier. Get them in synch following the instructions earlier. If you don't have them, extract and resynch them yourself using VobSub Configure (included in the VobSub package). Here's a guide:
http://www.doom9.org/dvobsub.htm
If there are multiple languages, get only the one you want (move the others back to the left window). When done you'll have an IDX and a SUB file. Rename them the same as the movie, play them along with the movie and resynch them in SubtitleCreator. When they're good, use them and the CTRL-F8 trick (use the dropdown box to select them) in your next try.
