svcd with nero

I tried to burn half of a divx format dvd rip that I own (its 700mb).
So I opened up NeroVision 4, selected half of the movie, then selected burn svcd.
When I played it on my dvd player the audio went way out of sync in about 25-30 minutes.

How do I burn half of the movie correctly with nero?

ps. not sure if this is conversion or authoring, so I posted it here.

At a guess, the audio was probably VBR MP3, which Nero doesn't handle too well. Try DVD2SVCD instead, if you must continue with this antiquated format.

DVD writers and Divx capable standalones are so cheap nowadays. Either gets around the running time limitations of SVCD with much better audio and video quality.

However until that happens, you can either try DVD2SVCD (which will handle avi files as well), or you can try replacing the audio in the original avi first using an uncompressed PCM version with virtualdubmod.

Using Nero to encode to SVCD is a bad idea. TMPGenc and CCE are better choices.

Indeed, VBR audio (which is the invention of Satan) could be responsible for your sync problems. It could also be that the video bit rate is too high. SVCD sync problems are often caused if the combined video+audio bit rate exceed 2723 Kbps. Please note that many encoders, including TMPGenc but NOT including CCE, actually encode parts of the video at a higher bit rate than you set them to use. The only way to verify this is to use something like the Teco Bit Rate Viewer (http://www.tecoltd.com) and see if your video bit rate exceeds 2600, which the SVCD specs don't allow. I've had out of sync SVCDs which I was able to get back in sync simply be re-encoding them and making sure the maximum bit rate stayed below 2600 and the combined video+audio bit rate never went above 2723.

As you own the DVD, you'd be better off doing a SVCD version of the DVD instead of the AVI:

HOLY CRAP that dvd writer is way cheap!!
i have a laptop though, but I found an external one on newegg for $65, no shipping.
