Hey,

I have a Winfast TV2000 XP.....and recently have been capturing some Video Cassettes and some TV shows....now because i dont get a very good reception normally, i use the Composite connection which hooks into my VCR, rather than Coax into the tuner card.....my problem lies here......The FPS on which everything records, no matter what settings i use, is no higher than 25.000....now this makes movements and a lot of things quite slow...my question is, is it possible to make this higher? and if so, how?

25 fps is the frame rate for PAL (since your are in Oz) - you can't change that.

Is it the playback of the captured video that is jerky/slow?

Oh, well i never knew that.....thanks....

erm, it is on both playback and recording that it gets jerky at times.

So are there any suggestions?

Post a short segments of the video so we can see the problem.

What format (compression) are you capturing with?

Are you capturing to the same hard drive that your OS and applications are on?

Well, i can't really post a segment, because it is only certain movements that are mainly noticable....and it isn't THAT bad, but when you compare it to what the television looks like without the tuner, there is just a mass amount of difference....i have tried basically every codec etc possible, but mainly use the DVD and MPEGII Optimal Quality on Winfast PVR software....and i have tried both the primary and slave harddrive to record onto.

EDIT: for example, if im watching a live broadcast, and the audience start clapping, it becomes really noticable, and quite annoying.

Capturing at faster that 25 fps won't help because it is being broadcast at 25 fps, and if you author to PAL DVD you will have to encode it at 25 fps. Given the sheer number of codec possibilities, I find it hard to believe you have tried every codec possible, although I'm sure you have been through the basics. Have you tried uncompressed or losslessly compressed capture as a test ? there are a number of good codecs for this.

OK, so if its all broadcast at 25FPS over here, then why does it compare so badly whats shown on my tv? And i did try Uncompressed a while back, ill give it another go though.
Also, for testing purposes i plugged the DVD player into it and recorded credits a while back, they were unreadable....i then plugged the DVD player back to my TV and the credits were quite ledgible.

Although the following is a VERY mild case of what happens, you can see what i mean....(i recorded this earlier, flicking channels....the first one is fine, but the basketball about 10 seconds in is noticable, especially compared to when i watched it on TV)

Sorry, but I can't see any great frame rate problem with the clip. What I can see is very average to poor TV reception, which I suspect is making it very difficult for the encoder to do a good job with. There is just too much noise, combined with the movement in the basketball clip, for the encoder to do a good job.

You said in an earlier post it is also very noticeable when you have an audience applauding etc. I suspect if you go back and review the portions that have problems, you will find in almost all cases it is during movement that you have the worst issues.

What can you do ? Get a better aerial. If possible, get an SD digital box to plug into the card (or change the card for one with a digital receiver). Unless you can get better reception to the tuner on the card, you can't really expect to get a better picture.
