Many thanks to the 9/29/06 post quoted here, it was under the wrong thread and I want to post it here to thank him and for others to find. Just bought the latest Circuit City $40 after rebate unit and was starting to get disappointed because half of my 1st test AVIs would not play. After finding the post below I'm all fixed up - it works superbly. Thanks DW, P-PA in NJ

You'll notice that some XVID file will not play correctly. You'll initially get a severely colourful and distorted image (but you can still make out the action)
The Philips-642 CAN play this file correctly...Here's how:
After the problematic file begins to play, press the 'SYSTEM/MENU' button on the remote. Press it again to return to the video.
You'll notice that you've now jumped ahead 5 seconds, and that the video is now playing correctly. (You'll also notice that you cannot go to the very begining of the video file...I'm not sure why)
Anyway, hope this helps someone out. I just found it out today after dealing with it for a few months.
I'm not sure what version of the firmware i have, and i'm too lazy to check right now.d

Thanks KK, that is a great site, turned me on to a great utility I was unaware of and gave VG explanations of the 642.
BTW, Google is my best friend, it was Google that brought me to the post I quoted, at which point I stopped searching
ps - thanks t handyguy for his response too.
