I'm making a divx dvd for my friend who has a standalone divx player
I've got this multilangual avi file with embedded subs.
Is this alright?
Will it work on a standalone?

Depends on the player. Best bet is to provide the subs as a separate .srt file. That's what most player handles.

Unless by embedded you mean burned into the video itself, in which case it's not an issue.

Ah - Yes, "burned in"/hard subs would of course be the most compatible way.

Not really, but I'd use VirtualDub and the subtitle (or was it textsub?) filer. However, this means reencoding the AVI, which I'd advise against. (Time & quality loss)
