OK i downloadedone of the new movies from iTunes and i opened it in vlc to see what all the stream info was. I attached an image of what it says. On thing that struck me as odd it has both subtitles and chapters in the file. i don't know how to activate the subtitles on the iPod it's self but the chapters do work on the iPod. My question is how long till we find a way to encode these new "HQ" files with chapters and subtitles with free software. (i use HQ to mean the new resolution of 640x480) If anyone is willing to help me look at these files and figure out a way to encode them i would be able to dedicate a lot of time to the project. I just think it would be nice to have a freeware way of doing this. (i don't even know if quicktime pro can do this yet)
thanks for your time

Are you sure mediacoder or super will make a 640x480 file iTunes will be able to upload to the iPod. The tools i use can make a very nice 640x480 M4V file but it can't be uploaded to the iPod. The other thing is what is the subtitle format or the chapter format? These are the things i would like a little help looking into to make a tool that can do all these things.

I don't know about mediacoder, but super will not create the new high-res videos. They use some different profile settings and such from the old 320x240 ones.

I really have enjoyed using your program SUPER. It's a great little program
and has done miracles for me for all kinds of little video conversion and
audio extraction needs that I have in my various projects.
I was just wondering if there would be an update of SUPER anytime soon that would
include iPod video conversion that supports the standard video for the new
iPod? Now they use the same h.264 codec, but with a resolution of 640x480
(twice the previous resolution), which is much better if you want to play
the video out on a TV.
So as I said, I'm just wondering if SUPER will support this new iPod standard anytime soon?
Thanks for your time and the great program,

Please follow these simple steps to use any resolution of your choice:
1.Select the 'Use DirectShow'
2.Open the DirectShow Interface box by clicking the small 'D' letter,
3.Check the 'Force A Custom VideoScale Size' to enter the value of your choice.
4.Drag & Drop your input file and hit encode.
Note that using the DirectShow mode requires that your PC has already the appropriate
Decoding/decompressing DirectShow ActiveX filter codec installed to be able to read the input source file.

Off topic,
But how do these movies look on your IPOD and on a TV. I assume that these movies are pan and scan and not widescreen. My PMP smashed and god help me I'm looking at an new video IPOD. Granted my screen will be smaller, but 350 bucks for 80 gigs and 6 hours of battery for video sounds very good.

640x266 is less than DVD resolution, and not exactly HDTV.

Even though I don't have a HDTV, I have to agree with ssj2_goha.
I haven't downloaded any movies from iTunes but I converted the movie Saw the other day to the new iPod specs (640x480) with QuickTime Pro and the results were amazing.
In another thread I posted that the movie appeared to me to be near DVD quality. After reading this thread I popped in the DVD and to be honest I can't tell any difference between the iPod video and the DVD.

The resolution is not nearly as important as the compression Codec, H.264 is a whole different ball of wax than MPEG-2. |
How is the New Version of QT Pro for Encoding? WHen I had an Ipod it was Dog slow.

Just an update on that. That was me that emailed the SUPER people, and that little solution they posted didn't/doesn't work. However, they are in beta right now on a newer version of SUPER that does support encoding in the new higher-res iPod format. Should be released as soon as they're done with testing.

Really? Hmmm... I've had a very good experience with it so far. It performs much better than QT.
