That's not the point.
The biggest bottleneck in today's PCs is the time required to get data from the hard drive. Using a USB flash memory stick to store the virtual paging file can decrease that time by an order of magnitude:

Of course, if you have enough RAM, the need for a paging file diminishes. From the CPU's perspective, waiting 7 to 12ms to read/write a memory location is an eternity....

I just ran the compatibility tester - it says I can run Vista but my RAID chip, Alcohol120%, Nero and Norton won't work.

My computer is close to being VISTA capable eventhough I bought it back in December 2004 ... all I would need is a video card upgrade which I've been wanting to do anyways. Also my system has 512MB RAM but if I was going to upgrade I would probably want 1GB RAM although I suspect 512MB RAM would be "enough" to run VISTA.
Anyways adopting VISTA will mean some money spent upgrading the computer's hardware ... although granted we aren't talking all that much.
So I doubt I will be an early adopter. However it is very likely that I will eventually get VISTA but I gotta get the hardware in order first and then wait for VISTA bug fixes. What I mean to say is even if my computer was 100% VISTA capable now I would still wait to buy VISTA until the bugs get ironed out.
It's not even that I'm all that worried about bugs in VISTA itself ... I am more worried about the programs I use needing to be "updated" in order to work correctly with VISTA ... something that I am sure will need to be done with more than one program.
Anyways I find all this talk very pre-mature since my understanding is that VISTA will not be available for purchase until early next year.
So for the poll I answered: "What's Vista?"

I know what you mean. I'll probably get it when I buy a new computer. Maybe mid to late next year sometime?? Then I'll have it fully configured and optimized for VISTA before I touch it - unless I build it myself in which case VISTA would be absolutely compatible becuase I'd choose each piece to be. But I'm too lazy for that so I'll probably end up buying some prebuilt machine (though one with a pci-e slot this time  )

I have a PCI-E slot in my pre-built store-bought computer but it only came with a 128MB Nvidia GeForce FX 5300 which ain't gonna do nothing for VISTA and does nothing now when it comes to new games.
Really though it is the only upgrade I need to make yet I never seem to have an extra $200 lying around for a new video card. If I am going to get one now it has to be 512MB and be a 7600 if not a 7900 Nvidia. In fact a 512MB 7900 Nvidia will be very nice. Perhaps this year's Christmas present to myself.
As for system RAM I have 512MB RAM and I have a feeling 512MB RAM will be OK but I am sure 1GB RAM will be better. I have 4 RAM slots and 2 are occupied so getting another 2 sticks of 256MB RAM each can't be much these days. That will be me 1GB RAM which has got to be more than enough.
My real concern though is how well WinXP software ... that runs well now under WinXP ... how well well will it run under VISTA?
I'll just wait for the software makers to "catch up" and make VISTA versions of their software. Then I'll bite.
Unless VISTA becomes Windows ME ... the only "home user" version of Windows (meaning don't count the NT stuff) that I passed up. I went straight from Win98 SE to WinXP and avoided the disaster that was Windows ME LOL

This is especially true with Microsoft.  Seriously though... every time a new OS comes out there's the usual round of complaining about how "buggy" it is. The complaints make it sound worse than it really is, usually.
Anyone familiar with me knows that I never upgrade until I have to. I run XP Home on 1 of my machines because I prefer the NTFS file system for gigantic DV captures, and I only run it because I got it for free (legally). I still run 98 on all of my other machines because I haven't needed to upgrade them.
I'm willing to wait as long as I can hold out. My only beef is when I'm FORCED to upgrade. This usually only happens with hardware. The minute I'm "forced" to upgrade my OS I'll become an exclusive Linux user. MS hasn't done this so far so I'm not to worried.

I thought Microsoft just ended support for Win95 this year and since VISTA will be out soon ... I bet Win98 will be cut off before the end of 2007.
Granted you can still use it ... just without any support ... like those darn security updates LOL

I think all of the articles and patches and stuff are available. They just aren't releasing new stuff. Its not like you have to go to underground websites to download the last avaiable patches. They just stop working on it.

That would be when TV sets had real manuals and were made in the USA.
Anyone remember how large the first remotes were and how little they could do? Talk about progress.
Windows Vista, another way to make your computer run slower and have less free hard drive space, and need more memory.
