This is by far my favorite post to date on this topic:

I especially like this part:

Realistically, you can't. Why not, because it isn't really a problem. All DVDs and TV programs lose some of the screen image to overscan, and you never notice. The problem lies with the incompetence of the people doing the hard subtitling of avi files, usually anime. While this was forgivable in the early days on the grounds that these files were to be viewed on PCs most of the time, this is no longer the case and they should have got their shit together by now. <snip>

More information on overscan can also be read here:

Here is a mini-guide to using FitCD ---> CLICK HERE

That guide was written with the intent of going from MPEG-4 to DVD but I think the guide makes FitCD easy enough to understand that you can easily adapt it for other uses, i.e., DVD Rip to DVD etc.

Well it is true that Lucio Fulci made some great films but he was also very inconsistent which I suppose is a nice way of saying, "he made some really great films and some really bad films not to mention a few in-between".

AENIGMA does have a trace of that Fulci 80's touch to it ... the early-to-mid 80's being his period of excessiveness in terms of ultra violence. For instance the AENIGMA "rape by snails" scene could have easily been in his masterpiece THE BEYOND which features a cool scene in a somewhat similar vein but with large tarantulas ... but despite that one moment and the familiar face of actor Jared Martin even the hardcore Fulci fan must admit that AENIGMA is ultimately a failure and definitely a bad movie.

I'm using a VLC player to watch a series, but the subtitle files it came with sometimes cut out. Is there another player that would show them more consistently?

Typically you'll have the option to view a safe area in your editing programs preview monitor. Keep subtitles and anything you don't want to lose in this area. It won't be long before every TV is HD and overscanning will be a thing of the past. I have a screenshot of a safe area in Vegas Video here: http://dvmoviemakers.blogspot.com/2007/11/tv-cropping.html
