I recently bought a Sony DVD player with progressive scan. I have a 34 inch Sony wide-screen tube television (not plasma, not lcd). When I hooked up the dvd player I am not all that happy with the picture. Everything is VERY dark. If I adjust it too much then I will have to adjust it back when I watch regular television. Is this normal?

Assumiong you are asking about progressive playback, are you connected YPbPr (green-blue-red cables)?
Is the TV selecting the component input and in progressive mode?
Is the DVD player switched to YUV (or component) out in Progressive mode?
Start with gain settings in default both sides and describe what you are seeing.

YPbPr cables are connected from DVD player to television, input #5 as detailed in the manual for the television
There is a button on the front of the DVD player to select progressive mode and it has been turned on.
You totally lost me with the last comment. I don't know what gain settings are.

By "gains" I mean brightness (black level), contrast (white level) and color saturation at the TV. Set these to look good for normal TV viewing. Similar controls are found in the setup menus of most DVD players. Those you can adjust to make the DVD player look good.
If progressive mode looks dark, try interlace mode over a S-Video cable and see if the picture is also dark.
You could also borrow a different DVD player to check your TV or try your new DVD player on a different TV to see which is at fault.
