Try mpeg vcr
You'll find it in the tools section on this site.

As long as you are only cutting and pasting it will save the result quickly without the need to reencode your movie. An absolute time and quality saver.

You'll still need another program to burn thou.

I bought the Sony Handicam DVD and shot my son's graduation. I finalised it and am able to view it in the DVD player. However, I am not able to copy to another DVD disc and not able to edit it with Sony Vegas... The sound is missing. Can someone help?

Any free program I use to convert VOB files, only takes the video and leaves out the sound because I need the AC3 plugin serial #.... does anyone know how I can get the sound/AC3 plugin to work without paying?

I have used TMPGEnc DVD Author and MPEG Video Wizard DVD. They all can make works that you want. But I accept the face of MPEG Video Wizard DVD. Because it's more flexible to cut and edit VOB files.

If you have a Sony DVD Camcorder, you need to use the DVD Viewer within the accompanied Picture Package Software. This will allow you to view not the VOBs but the individual MPEGs on the DVD. You can edit the individual MPEGs as you like and then use any autoring program to author your DVD.

How do I edit a home made DVD with VOB and IFO, etc files? The end result is how to split the audio from the video?

Then how do I burn the audio to an audio CD or DVD ?

I have some programs. Roxio 7.5 and Nero 7 Ultra with 2 DVD burners. MS Movie Maker.

I have no idea if the best steps are to burn the DVD files to a WMV or which format then split the audio / video into 2 separate files.

Thanks from New Orleans.

You just want to extract the audio from the VOBs? There are a lot of ways. If it's already on the hard drive, then open the VOBs in DGIndex and File->Save Project. That will give you the audio by default. You can also decode it to WAV audio at the same time by going Audio->Output Method->Decode AC3 to WAV, if the DVD audio is AC3. If you want both the audio and the video, then File->Save Project and Demux Video.

If the DVD is on a DVDR, then put it in the DVD-ROM and open DVD Decrypter in IFO Mode (at the top, Mode->IFO). Go to the Stream Processing Tab, check the "Enable Stream Processing" box, highlight the audio, hit "Demux" below, give it a Destination Folder, and Decrypt.

Thank you manono for the detailed reply. It all worked well to split the audio from the video then take the audio and burn it to an audio cd to play in the car. You are a genius. Enjoy your New Orleans Cajun Gumbo

Is there any way to edit the file w/o converting to .mpg first. I have a lot of home video DVD folders on my hard drive and I wanted to make a video compilation from different files. Will all the files have to be converted to .mpg first? Thanks!

Hi there biggrin.gif

I have vob files taken directly from DVD. When I converted them to avi using virtualdubmod with xvid compression the output video is created with 720*480 resolution where as the original video is 16:9 (854*480). I tried the resize filter but getting an error. cry.gif

how to get the 16:9 ? question.gif

Please help me out.

I tried MPEGStreamclip, avidemux etc. all results are same.

The original VOB files are 720x480 and not 854x480. That's only the resized display size. If you don't know what you're doing (and apparently you don't), my suggestion is to use AutoGK. It'll resize them properly.

biggrin.gif Thanks manono. " apparently I don't know " that's why I am asking. If I know, then why would I waste others time by asking things which I already know.

I got it with the avidemux compressed with xvid successfully at 854*480.

yes there are programs like AutoGk, mediacoder, super etc. I know it is (854*480) not the storage aspect of the file but the display aspect.

My point is I am trying to do the hand work not auto. I am getting this aspect ratio problem when I try to convert to avi with direct stream copy, of course vitualdubmod says that the file uses a algorithm where the direct stream copy is not possible. avidemux is converting the file to avi with direct copy of video and audio probably just putting them in avi container, but the avi displays 720*480.

I want to know what's happening. How the compressed file is created with 854*480 and the direct copy is created with 720*480.

Please enlighten me lightbulb.gif . I really want to know how DVD movie file (VOB) storage aspect and display aspect works.

Non-square pixels. You have the Storage Aspect Ratio, the Display Aspect Ratio, and you have the Pixel Aspect Ratio. The four major DVD formats (NTSC 43, NTSC 169, PAL 43 and PAL 169) all have different pixel aspect ratios, none of which are square. The player compensates for this on playback by using the DAR flag and knowing what 4:3 or 16:9 means for PAL and NTSC.

When you converted to AVI you created a file with a 1:1 PAR/DAR. You could have just as easily created an AVI file that retained the 720 x 480 SAR of the original, and given it a 16:9 DAR so that smart players (WMP is not a smart player) would display it correctly.

biggrin.gif Thanks guns1inger

So it's PAR/DAR and SAR. So when copying the stream directly it is creating SAR and when compressed PAR/DAR, right . Yes DVD = Non-square pixels and AVI uses square pixels. Well I don't say that I have understood everything, but so far so better.

I use The KM Player and the xvid displays correctly but not the direct stream copy. Then how to control this PAR/DAR and SAR ? Got any Information on that, like which program or how ?

Thanks for helping me out.

Greets.

KM Player - Screen Control. Here you can tell the player to use the DAR or the SAR, or override it completely. The reason your direct stream copy doesn't work is because you have no DAR flag set in your AVI. Virtualdub etc don't set one. Use Mpeg4modifier to change the DAR of Xvid/Divx encoded AVI files.
