Subtitle editing & synchronization.

hi there,

I ripped a few DVD Chapters along with the audio and the subtitles using the DVDDecrypter. Finding the subtitles coming up on the screen before the vocal even starts, I decided to edit the subtitles and then synchronize them correctly.

So, following the guides given by Paddington, TheMatrixx and Erik Vullings(all these guides are almost the same), I demuxed the .IFO and .VOB files to get one .m2v and .ac3 files each, and two .sup files.

Here's a screenshot of the ripped files on my HDD:

Further following the guide(s), they stated that these .sup files can be synchronized and edited using the Subtitle Workshop and then saved as *.srt files or *.sub files, and thereafter can be put back together(i.e., audio, video and subtitles) using ifoedit or rejig.

Here comes the real twist. This is what happened after I ripped, and demuxed the files:

In order to convert into *.srt or *.sub files, the *.sup files should first of all open in the Subtitle Workshop software. This isn't happening. The .sup files(neither are the originally ripped .ifo files) are not supported by Subtitle Workshop for the purpose of being opened and edited. So, how the hell can I convert them into *.srt or *.sub formats without firstly opening them. This is a very confusing(perhaps wrongly directed) guide.

There are three guides which explain the subtitle editing, given under the heading "Other DVD Backup guides, DVD to HD, Subtitle" in the HOW TO DVD Backup section :

1.) Rip and add new Subtitles to a DVD with SubtitleCreator by Paddington

2.) How To Backup a DVD and Add new Subtitles to the DVD using DVD-Lab Pro by TheMatrixx

3.) How to backup and add new subtitles to a DVD by Erik Vullings

Amongst the above three, the first and third guides only help out in editing the subtitles(check out if u want).

The first and third guides both use VobEdit for extracting .sup subtitle streams, and use Subtitle Workshop for editing the subtitles and thereafter saving them as *.srt or *.sub files(SubRip format).

But, in order to edit the subtitle files i.e., *.sup files(extracted by VobEdit), the Subtitle Workshop must open them first of all, which it doesn't do. So, the question of editing and saving them as *.srt or *.sub doesn't even arise.

Now, my question is how do I edit the subtitles(which I firstly ripped and saved as .ifo and .vob files on hdd, then demuxed them into .sup files using vobedit) of my ripped DVD on HDD using subtitle workshop or any other software that u want to suggest me.[/i]

rip directly from the dvd or use vsrip to rip to sub/idx files. i don't know any tool that can convert sup to srt...you can try with subrip...but I haven't tried it.

you must use subrip or subresync with sub/idx also. the subs are images and subtitle workshop does not support them.

File->Open vob(s)
Click Open ifo and open the idx
Click start

you should get a idx file if you use vsrip.

and if you are open a ifo from the dvd video_ts folder you must open the vts_xx_x.ifo that belongs to the main movie. just try open different ones.

i'm uterly confused with so many softwares around me - subrip, vsrip, subtitle workshop, subtitle creator, srt2sup etc.... want a complete step by step procedure to i can edit the subtitles and replace the older .ifo file with the newly edited one. i don't know whether .vob file has to be replaced after editing the subtitles, so, i won't say anything abt it, but listen to what u say.

each guide is doing only a partial job, and i couldn't get the full picture clearly....i'm kind of facing big trouble with this stuff.

To convert the SUP file to and .srt file, I use DVDsubedit. This uses OCR (optical character recognition) to turn the SUP file (which is really an image) into an .srt, which is a text file. Then you can use Subtitle Workshop to edit your subtitles. Once you're done with the edits, you run it through Subtitle Creator to re-save it as a SUP file, which you can then use as your new subtitles when you remux.

If you can figure the delay the easiest method to correct it is to use SubtitleCreator for the job. No OCR necessary. Open SubtitleCreator and go Tools->Manipulate SUP and VobSub. In the bottom right of the new screen "Open Sub" and scroll to and open the SUP file. In the bottom right hit the "Delay" button and add in a delay, "Apply" it followed by Save Sub. Save the edited SUP file under a new name, do the muxing and test it out. If it's still off, do those steps over again or (probably easier and faster) do the final delay adjustments using DVDSubEdit.

For other editing (like fixing bad grammar and the like), SubtitleCreator claims to be able to OCR a SUP file to SRT, but I've never used it for that. Like most everyone else I open either the IFO or an IDX/SUB (the IDX/SUB can be instantly created in SubtitleCreator, from the SUP file) in SubRip followed by the OCR.

Personally, I don't think bad-mouthing guides written by valued members of this community is such a good idea, especially since you don't know what you're talking about. Nor do I think that more-or-less demanding the owner of this site make a guide especially for you and/or messaging you with private lessons is very clever. But it's just my opinion and doesn't necessarily represent the opinion of the site owner or anyone else.
