Import the DVD in Tmpgenc DVD author by select a add DVD-Video and select the VIDEO_TS folder on the DVD. Use the built in editor to cut/join the DVD.

If you want to use other more advanced editors you can convert or demultiplex the vob to MPG or video/audio streams.

Thanks, Baldrick, for your comments. But I don't use Virtualdub as an editor so going to another program such as you mentioned would not help. I use it primarily for video processing prior to burning a DVD and it does a good job at that normally, so I really need to know what's happened to it so I can get it working again.

Ulead VideoStudio can also import DVD-Video and DVD-VR to MPEG-2, and you don't have to worry about 16:9 either.
