I have the opportunity of buying a Hauppage WinTV NOVA-t card for receiving digital broadcasts in the UK.

The native software that comes with this card enables capture straight to MPEG-2.

Is there software that will enable capture to AVI, as I prefer to work with that? Or do these cards only output compressed streams? I already have Ulead Videostudio 8 but I am not clear from the manual as to whether that will do the job.

It can only "capture" to mpeg. And it doesn't capture in same way as capture analog video, it just saves the digital video stream(it is in mpeg2 format) on your hd.

You can also use autogk, dvx 4 instead of gordian knot to convert to avi (divx, xvid, huffyuv, dv).
