Does anyone know of any applcations that will work as a software DVR using the firewire port on most HDTV receivers?

Most I don't think so, firewire on hdtvs and stbs has gone the way of the dodo bird. In favor of atleast DVI but even that is getting replaced by HDMI.

Even though it's firewire I believe the signal being sent from the STB to end piece (pc as DVR or DVHS) is plain old analog (downconverted from digital) that gets upsampled back to digital at the end.

There is another way using CapDVHS that's buried somewhere in that landfill of information people refer to as the AVSforum.
