For a technical comparison read this:

If you just want to backup movies or store data then I think there is no difference - both are good. The most important thing is to find a brand that suits your dvd burner, not if it's plus or minus format. The price difference where I come from is minimal. I use plus myself. (Some old dvd players may have problems with the plus format, but all those players made in the last three years or so should be fine).
For people using digital video cameras to produce their own movies the plus format is superier I have been told, because you can add new footage seamlessly.

No kidding, I have found serious playback problems with -R, all of which have more or less disappeared since I switched to +R.

Playback has little to do with whether + or - but more to do with the dye used by the disc manufacturer.Doesnt matter, if its a crap dye you get a crap burn. The morale here is use quality media and/or quality dye. Most burners prefer a particular dye and not whether they are + or-.

Every disc I have had a problem with has been -R, and this is from several different manufacturers, and I mean different manufacturing IDs. I've had two IDs from TDK, and one a piece from Media Cache, Smartmedia, as well as DigiMedia. Even with a new player, the problem is occasionally evident. Reduced, but evident, all the same.
