All my discs recorded with the E50 play fine on the E50, Pu them in a player (tried cyberhome, alba etc) and the video hesitates briefly every minute through the recoding, start to end.

It is very short (easily missed maybe when viewing from a distance) but at very regular intervals.

Problem occurs with ALL the different dvd-r media that I have tried so far. On copying such a disc - the copy still has the problem

Possibly an encoding error or non-standard encoding in the panny.

I've never heard of this issue. Are you finalizing the discs?

Yes I am finalizing the discs, so far it is on every disc I have recorded

Perhaps the player is faulty

Perhaps. It certainly sounds like a warrenty issue.

what media? Did you use Panasonic media to test? What are you recording? Try changing the recording method from 'auto' to 'fixed'

OK Guys, maybe I'm thick!

Took the e50 back to the shop, gave them one of my discs recorded with the pannythey popped it in a Sony and it played OK. Told me they couldn't change it and I would have to ring Panasonic myself!

Got home rang panasonic, after much queing on the line, a fairly abrupt gentleman refused any further assistance because none of my players were explicitly 'DVD-R' compatible although all play dvd-r discs produced by other means.

went and bought a new explicitly 'DVD-R' compatible player and hey-presto the panny discs play correctly.

Lesson learned - The pannies don't produce 100% std dvd video, no leg to stand looks like i'm stuck with it...

Did I miss something somewhere? Is there two ways of making a dvd video disc, one for all other players and one for dvd-recorders/dvd-r rated players? I believed dvd-r recorders were most compatible with stand-alone players, thats why I avoided dvd+r recorders!

does anyone know how to at least filter out the part of the recording that will allow me to copy a panny disc (on PC) to make it into a std dvd-video disc?

you can use dvd shrink and make a disc with the movie only with out the title and use a computer dvd burner to write it. If you record in Standard format on the panny. You can use dvd shrink to join two dvds and then it will compress it. The quality is actually better than using LP on the panny.

If you want to keep the panny menu, use a dvd ripper and just rip it into your computer. It usually fixes any bugs. (if you want to be on the safe side use info edit to fix the vts files if it needs to) And use your burning program to burn it back to a dvd. Remember you need both AUDIO_T and VIDEO_TS folders.

I have tried a direct copy and the fault is transferred to the copy.

Assuming DVD-Shrink is the same as DVD2One, I have tried this also but the instability in the picture/audio is there on the copy as well!

I will try to get a copy of DVD-Shrink and try it.

OK, here's a possibility since you didn't mention what recording mode or length you used from the DMR-E50. The Panasonic's default is "automatic" on the "Hybrid VBR Resolution" setting in the video setup menu, which can sometimes generate multiple resolutions in the same recording, which may not be compatible with some DVD players. Try changing the setting from "automatic" to "fixed", and redo the recording and see if this change could improve the playback on your players. Tried the Hybrid Resolution Setting but the disc still didnt play properly
