It seem that this player has started having problems reading the DVD when you first put it in. I have to open and close the door a couple of times to get it to read. Keep saying "no CD",but once it finds the disk it has no more problems until the next disk. I though it might need cleaning, but my owners manual doesn't say anything about cleaning the player. Anyone here know the procedure or is there a way to clean the reader? Thanks

It may need cleaned but my 1100w struggles with some of the crappy +RW media (*cough.. Memorex... cough*). What media are you using?

First thing to try is some canned air. If that doesn't work, the 'best' way is dissassembly and manual cleaning with a q tip and isopropyl alcohol. I wouldn't recommend this method unless you have little to lose or are adventurous. The optics and scanning mechanism is very delicate. My Apex gave up after several years of faithful use and jammed a DVD back behind the tray. Non-recoverable error. biggrin.gif

Apex are cheap and disposable. Spend another 40 bucks and buy the latest Apex model.

Some of the Apex 1100 are not replaceable ... I have two of them and they both have the MacroVision turned off ... those two are not replaceable.

This player has the MacroVision turned off and has the 1meg mem. Don't want to have to replace it. It's not that bad. I just though there might be an easy way to clean the reader.

The AD 1100 is still selling at my Wal-Mart ... just saw them a couple of weeks ago.

I wonder if the Disk reading carriage can be swapped and leave the circuit board in there ???

There is a wire ribbon cable going to and from the carriage to the circuit board.

I did open a couple for visual inspection ... to check the rom chip.

Of course when I did this ... I broke the seal.

I had this same player with this same problem. I got a new one & gave the old one to my cousin. I was later surprised to hear that he had replaced the laser lense with one from a portable cd player & now it works fine.

Go figure...
