NTSC=>PAL conversion using RGB outputs

I have a PAL TV.So, it can't display NTSC DVDs properly when the video signal is passed through composite connections.It shows Black and White images. I am planning to buy a DVD Player whch has component outputs (RGB).If I take the RGB outputs and convert them into PAL Composite signals using an IC such as AD 725, will I be able to see the DVDs in colour?

There do exist DVD players that are region free and also do NTSC to PAL conversions.

So they can play ANY region DVD be it NTSC or PAL and can convert NTSC to PAL for display on a PAL only TV

I live in the USA so I don't know where to buy in Europe but I'm sure someone from Europe will come along and post.

In the meantime search the 'net or buy some electronics/video magazines which should have ads to European outlets that sell such special DVD players.

you either have to buy a converter, or a dvd who does the conversion from ntsc to pal.

Just buy a PAL DVD player that can play both formats (most do) or better still, one that is multiregion.

I bought a pioneer Pioneer DV-464S from amazon.co.uk and hooked it up to the TV with the std cable provided (not SCART). NTSC and some VCD's were playing in black and white.

So i bought an external NTSC to PAL Converter for £50, the only problem now was the PAL films were playing in black and white and it was to much of a faff to unplug it every time you wanted to watch a PAL dvd.

So i decided to buy a SVA D-2818, which has built in NTSC->PAL conversion. This worked fine but the only problem was when it came from the amazon.co.uk reseller it was locked to region 2 even though it was supposed to be multi-region, so i ended up selling it on to someone who only wanted region 2 anyway.

I asked the reseller for some advice on another suitable player and they recommended the Toshiba SD330E and was going to sell it me for £15 + delivery, so i bought it anyway. It doesn't have the automatic conversion of NTSC->PAL but if you use a SCART lead and set the output to RGB on the dvd player settings and also have an RGB compatible SCART socket on your PAL only TV, you will get both PAL and NTSC films displaying in colour on your TV. I believe RGB uses a different signal and that's why it works.

And it just so happened this was the same case with original Pioneer player, so i wasted all this time and money and the original player did it anyway

But my PAL TV doesn't have SCART or RGB inputs.So i am asking, if i encoded the RGB signals of the DVD player into Standard Composite signal and then input it into my TV, will it work?

I can't see that working because the TV must need to be capable of receiving an RGB signal, which I wouldn't think your TV is.

Your only option is to get a player like the SVA D-2818 that's automatically converts the signal before it goes into your composite converter or buy a new TV.

My Yamada DVX-6600 (£70) has just arrived this morning and I'll be able to play all my Divx movies now as well

My TV isn't capable of receiving RGB signals.But i am talking about converting the RGB signals output by the DVD Player into PAL Composite signals.My TV supports Composite signals.Will that work?

I'm not sure if that would work to be honest?

Looking at my Yamada DVX-6600 last night though, it has a button on the remote control where you can set the output to NTSC, PAL or MULTI. So if you bought this player you would be able to just connect your player to your composite converter and it should work.

So, the Yamaha DVX-6600 supports NTSC-PAL/PAL-NTSC conversion?
Also, am i right to say that the Sony, Panasonic and Pioneer DVD players don't support this conversion?

I think this means it can read both NTSC and PAL discs but will output the signal as the same?

Tandy are selling the yamada now as well

My $40 and $60 players do NTSC to PAL on the fly (and vice versa, but no PAL TV). Much much easier than dealing with a conversion. Heck, I have plenty of 'Best of' DVD's with mixed PAL/NTSC clips.
