need help speeding up computer

i have a slow running computer and i just wanted to know if yall had any suggestions on how to speed it up

Computer specs
Compaq Presario 5010us
Intel Pentium III 866MHz with 256kb integrated
Windows ME OS
128mb RAM
40gb hard drive

i recently added 256mb RAM, giving me a total of 384mb RAM, it still runs slow though. any suggestions would be great.

get a faster computer would be the simple solution ... and in the long run -- the cheapest ...

Sorry but compaq's are about impossible to upgrade. You're really better off buying all new stuff. You could put win98 on there but you'll have to call COMPAQ and get the driver disk from them. I think it's about 5 cd-roms. It's a real time consuming, pain in the ass, to fix Compaq computers. I think Windows ME has this command in it. click start-run-type MSCONFIG- then change the startup programs that you don't need in the background. There is a program called "Tweak ME " that will help to optimize your OS too. That might speed up a little. But if you serious improvement you'll have to get a new computer. I don't think you can over clock Compaq stuff. You might be able to get another Intel Chip. I think Pentium III's went up to 1.2g if i'm not mistaken. Here's two that I found that might work in your board. NOT sure though Newegg.com has a 1gig chip for 92$ that should fit in your board. Here's one from compgeeks.com they have a 1.1g for $139.

Also run defrag on it once a week if you use it a lot. Even if it's only 5% defraged that might be the 5% that you use the most. tongue.gif
